What are the most common cip length 338lm magazines? I assume aics? Accurate mag has a dssf 338lm 3.850 magazine bottom metal im considering.

All I can tell, the original sako 995 clip is aprox 0,100 longer than the AI and is already useless. This is why I built on a single shot action and will sell the sako when I get a chance

To cycle 300gr bullets, you need to cycle 4"+ long amo

To that I have questions:

Mag opening on the action I have is 3.786 approx. Loading 300gr bullets (berger otm hybrids) can I not simply have the chamber made specifically for it to allow for deeper seating of around 3.750-3.775 with a closer throat? Most factory .338lm 250grs are around 3.600-3.650 on VLD ogives, so a closer throat is already needed (probably why the .338s ive seen never shoot sub MOA). I'm not interested in extreme pressures or crazy velocities. I want accuracy and to be able to use the magazine.

Ive already accepted the fact the 338lm is a challenge to tame, but the more detail on chambering I have, the better.

Bile......have your smith throat the chamber to accept the OAL of your choosing ( if that's with a deep seated 300 then so be it) then load accordingly you will still have plenty of room to get the velocities the 338 Lapua was designed for! I'm running an HS Precision custom rifle ( built for me) and the throat is too long for the 300's but perfect for the 250's. All I do is run the 300's single feed and the 250's thought the mag. Give the 250 Lapua Scenars a go......had mine hold up enough to get to a mile at 1900 ft/elev. and the boy was able t shoot a 10-12" groups at 1 mile with it as well!!

Your mag length is plenty long for what your asking to do!

I see. I ended up ordering a ptg stealth for the action. Badger ordnance who makes my action said the cip mags will work. My calipers say otherwise but who knows. Which is why i made a thread in the first place.

Im curious about your 338. What kind of throat and chamber did you have cut?

Don't have the rifle besides me here now to get the measurements......but the chamber is of HS Precisions making. They build everything in house including reamers. My OAL for the 250 gr. Bullets mag feed, the 300's are too long to feed through the mag if .005" off the lands.....so I single feed them for now.

If you have a chamber reamed by a good gunsmith.......take him a dummy round that has your choice of 300 gr bullet seated in it to fit the mag and feed from it, and he can cut your chamber to fit that specific overall length ( as long as he's got a reamer with no throat and throater to cut to your exact measurement so).

Ac Douglas gunsmith in Saskatoom has built me a Lapua in this way for hunting elk and the chamber was cut for the Barnes 265 LRX so to feed from an HS Magazine.

Hope this helps.... If not ask away.
