338 lupua mag ammo

Has a preference developed between 250 grain or 300 grain heads for sport shooting at 800-1000?

I have the opportunity to buy several variants of heads but don't want to spread myself too thin to get working on a recipe if say 250 grain is what most prefer to work with etc...?

Just hoping for a bit of feedback from people in the know...Thanks

I have a 338 Lapua with a 1-9 twist and it groups up a lot nicer with 300's.

Thanks Gents!
I have a 1-10" twist and I will be trying out 250, 265, and 300 to see what works best out of my rifle.
Cheers paul

You should really just shoot what your gun likes. If you are only going to 1000yrds it doesn't really matter.

For a quick example @ 1000yrds
250gn Lapua Scenar from a starting velocity of 2900fps has 24.6moa drop

300gn Lapua Scenar from a starting velocity of 2700fps has 27.4moa drop

Velocities are based on quickload predictions for a 26" barrel and drop is JBM ballistics.

Once you get past 1300yrds the 300gn really kicks the pants off the 250gn but under 1000yrds its a different story.

Just wondering, I was shooting my friends 300 ultra with a brake. He warned me that when you fire it, it makes your teeth rattle. I thought it was a term he was just throwing around for the recoil ... nope ! it really makes your teeth rattle. Im gonna build a 338 lapua, Ive never shot one. Do they do the same thing ?

What kind of brake? I've got a braked Savage LRH in 338 Lapua, and it barely kicks more than a 308.

I'm shooting a 15 lb Weatherby in 338 lapua. It has an accubrake on it. Im good for about 40 - 50 rds before the shoulder has had enough. It does rattle the teeth if you're standing anywhere off to the side though lol!
