338 rum

The .338 RUM is my main hunting rifle. I too have a Remmy 700, but mine is the laminate stainless. Love the extra weight of the laminate stock. Shoots MOA if I do my part. For most of its career, it has been stoked with a handload of a 225 grain Accubond and a carefully worked up to max+ load of H1000. The velocity out of the 26" barrel easily rubbed 3150 fps. Absolutely floors elk and moose (and a few deer). I also had a brief affair with the 275 grain Swift A Frame. Accurate and hit like a freight train loaded over a stiff dose of H1000. I say brief affair because I ran out and couldn't find more when I needed them - hence the switch to the more easily obtained Accubonds. This year I tried 250 grain TSX's with Retumbo for the first time. Hit an bull elk from so far away that I had to pack a lunch to go get it. The bullet performed very well. Very accurate too.

All in all, my experience with the caliber is that it shoots just about everything I fed it REALLY well. It will come down to what your rifle is hungry for. The 250 grainers stiffly loaded will impress a certain dynamic experience of recoil on you that you will tell your friends all about afterwards; but they really impress game. Slowest powders are the name of the game and I have found H1000 and Retumbo to be my best friends in this regard for accuracy and top velocities.

I have owned a number over the years. by far my favorite cartridge. Currently using a Custom Rem 700 w/ 26" PacNor bbl. A stiff load of Retumbo w/ Sierra 250 SBT has grouped sub MOA with all my rifles with a chrony velocity of 3050 fps with an SD of 24 fps (PacNor bbl)
Recoil is very stiff and I would recommend a slimline gilled muzzle break to calm things down substantially (Neil Suttill of Suttills Gunsmithing in Meadow Lake, SK manufactures and installs an excellent slim line gilled break)
None of my rifles liked the Reloader series powders but your experience may differ

The 700 RUMs series are also a personal favorite too and glad to see I'm not the only one. So I'm intrigued about your results groupings, bullet consistency at the post 3000 fps flight time mark, just for comparison sake, with what was put in the case fuel tank in grains, up close and friendly at 200 yards to distances far far far away.

I'm pushing 225 TSXs with a healthy dose of H100V. Shoots confirmed sub MOA out to 300 - I haven't checked beyond that, just rang gongs.

 
I would have to agree that this is the most impressive hunting caliber I have ever used. Shoots like a laser at long range and can move the heavy bullets very fast. I can't believe that it hasn't caught on more.
 
Been using Ramshot's Magnum with 250 gr bullets. Has worked well on a couple of moose in the 400-450 range and its a ball powder so it meters very well. Hope this helps. Have fun.
