Hey guys, cant seem to answer my question anywhere I've searched so I'll try here, can I re barrel to 338 rum using a Remington 700 magnum long action? If not what will need to be changed?
Thanks in advance

Your question made me curious............so I went down to my vault, where I have several factory RUMs and many factory standard belted magnums in 700 Rems. There is only a very slight difference at the back of the feed lips. A standard belted action would have to be opened up just slightly and make the triangular openings in the mag box to accommodate the fatter case for 3 under. The action feeds the RUM case perfectly as it is, you just can't pop the case down through the feed lips at the back to load the magazine. All in all I would say it would take me about 1/2 hr to maybe an hour, to make the standard belted mag action function perfectly with a RUM case.

good to know, thank you!

My Bad, I guess I blew right past that. Still a pile of work and a chance of having issues. Like was mentioned earlier, maybe keep an eye out in the EE for a donor already set up for the RUM's.

A half an hour doesn't sound like a pile of work

So what you're telling me is that I can get a 338 edge built!? I thought I needed a fancy extra long action for that!

Sure. Shawn Carlock's rifles were made on Remington's for years. As you likely know, Shawn owns Defensive Edge and that's where the "Edge" in .338 Edge comes from. A Wyatt box goes a long ways to keeping it a repeater with the longest bullets and that can save you cutting the RUM slots.

You could even do it with a flat file in a few minutes if you wanted to. If your file somehow managed to go full-auto on you and you were left standing in a pile of excess shavings, there's still the center feed Wyatt box as a plan B.

I did exactly that when I opened my M70 up to feed 3.8" rounds. A few minutes of careful fining at the rear of the opening and voila.
