.338 Savage or .337 Federal?

I've got a Savage 1899A in .303 Savage with a completely shot out barrel. As it is not an original gun (the wood serial #s don't match the receiver serial #), I was thinking of using it as intended- shooting it, after having the barrel rebored to .338 caliber.
I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with necking up the .303 Savage case to accept a .338 bullet?
My other thought was to rebore to .338, and rechamber to .307 Winchester. I think necking the .307 up to .338 would make for a kickin', brush-bustin' cartridge (I'm calling it a .337 Federal, inspired both by Federal's newish .338 Federal and Win's .307).
Or am I overlooking an already existing .338 rimmed cartridge? I didn't have much luck finding something with google, but there are an awful lot of wildcats out there and may have missed it. Am I reinventing the wheel?

There's nothing that can't be done with a good machine shop and the ability to make reamers, the only question is whether or not the down range results are there.
If it were me I would use the 307 instead of the 303 Sav. brass purely on price and availability and the fact the 307 is problably stronger. Although you can use pointed bullets the need to keep over all length to functioning limits, a lot of the bullet would be in the case. Hornady no longer makes their FN 200gr. .338
I don't know how much pressure the Savage 99 action can handle but my guess would be not much more than their .300 Sav loadings so maybe rather than trying something uncharted maybe see if you can do .375 Winchester.
The 99 was chambered in the old 38-55 so you have precedence there.

A copy of Cartridges of the World would be a wealth of info for you as well.

My 2 cents only of course.

Make it into something you can get brass for.Get a takeoff barrel from a Rem 700 30 caliber and rechamber it for 30-30..............Harold or 7mm into 7-30 Waters[ Spool should work for either]
