Anyone have one or had one?
I am thinking of building a .338 and this one looks kinda neat.
I don't care about availability of factory ammo, I hand load.
I have a couple of other oddball customs, so I know what comes with doing something like this.
I like to have something different just for the sake of having something you don't see on the firing line everyday.
Thinking of building it from a 700 BDL-DM that I already have in .30-06...

Cheers y'all.

That is what it is, one of several 338-06 Improved variants.

Sounds like a pretty good one, if that is your thing. :)

Although, if I wanted a 338 caliber wildcat right now, I'd skip all the muss and fuss and go straight to the 338-375 Ruger ;)

338 Scoville

I had a BDL DM built into a 338-06 before hearing of the Scoville version. Back issues of handloader and rifle magazines cover the origins with Dave Scoville. I can come close to 2700 fps with 225 gr Hornady bullets and 2500 with 250's. The Scoville will do a bit better. The one mistake I made was not specifying throat depth to my gunsmith. As a result I have to seat the 225's deeper than I'd like. Lots of magazine length left over. I got a 24in Douglas Premium barrel and bedded the action. You'll get magnum performance with 25% less powder and recoil. I and many others feel it is a better round than the 35 Whelan. Good luck. Cheers,Bill

Ok so Dave Scovill, the editor of Handloader and Rifle magazines (and long time employee of Wolfe Publishing) created this cartridge. It is a blown out 30-06 case with the shoulder moved forward to increase case capacity then necked up to .338. Dave's original intention was the make a this cartridge produce 7mm STW velocities in an improved 30-06 case, so going up in caliber facilitated that. You can expect 2850fps out of a 200gr Hornady or Accubond, and about 2800fps with a 210gr TTSX.
The 185gr TTSX will do 300 Mag speeds.
Build it and have great fun (my reading has revealed Dave like to use 26" barrels in his testing and his pet rifle in the cartridge is a Ruger M77).

Almost the same as my 338-06 Ackley Improved I built-built off a "IV" Action from a Sako m75 greywolf rifle. Love the caliber!! 24" barrel shoots 225gr Accubonds and TTSX's quite nicely-built to shoot heavier bullets-if I wanted lighter I would load 200gr Accubonds in my 300WM. the Scovill caliber is listed in the Barnes reloading manual.

210 TTSX would be another great choice.

It's the 338 Campfire. Didn't Rick Bin at 24HourCampfire start down that road and then suddenly trail off into nothingness? Perhaps a tad viscious?

the scovill cartride isn't very new. looks like my 8mm gibbs. done some 50 years ago. if i necked my 8 up to 338 it could be twins. a very efficent cartridge.
