338 Ultra Meg users

had one for a short time, it was a 26" tube stainless 700

with 97 grains of H1000 behind a 250 grain Nosler, it would do 3060 fps. That is some serious medicine

Kicks like a 416. There is no free lunch.

I have one, it works well, hate the bolt lock thing. The serrated trigger needs to be sanded down, with the amount of recoil it has it ripped the skin off my trigger finger in a few shots. Recoil is more than my .375 H&H but tajectory is better. I have a Leupold VX III 3.5 - 10 x 40 on it that works great. It tips elk over, what else do you need? :D

The 338 Ultra is very accurate, flat shooting, and hard hitting.
It takes an experienced and determined shooter to master this beast, but I think that in the right hands it is one of the best long range cartridges ever conceived.

Despite what others may say I find the Ultra hits with significantly more authority than the 338 Win. An animal hit with the 338 Win usually bounces 20 yards and then tips over while Ultra shot game often reacts like it has been hit by lightning.
I also find the Ultra overall to be less fussy and more accurate than the 338 Win.

Weak bullets are a mistake in this one.

Though the recoil is significant it pales compared to a 416 Rem of the same design and weight (I own both).

Unless you intend to shoot game beyond 300 yards I think there are easier rounds to shoot that will accomplish the same result in close.

Remington builds the 338 Ultra's too light. Adding a 1/2 pound or more of weight goes a long way to taming the recoil.
Most will find the factory Remington's recoil more than they are comfortable with. Plan on (at least) modifying the stock to calm the beast.

Depending on the hunt I run either Leupold's 3.5-10x40 or 4.5-14x50 Lr.

I shoot both the little brother and the big brother of the 338 RUM. The 300 RUM wears a sportster HS Precision stock with a SIMS pad and a custom muzzle brake. The 375 RUM is also in a custom HS Precision safari contour stock with a mercury recoil reducer in the butt and a SIMS pad. The upgraded chassis really make a huge difference in felt recoil as does the brake. If your looking to purchase a 338 RUM, there is a 700 BDL SS on clearence at Shooterschoice in Waterloo for $750. The powder does go quick so buy plenty of the slow stuff and quality hunting bullets
