Stupid humor aside, I think you are right RJ. I think am going to find a 338 and order a Bell and Carlson stock if I have to.....

I don't have much use for anything that goes faster than about 2800 ft/sec on account of liking to eat it. A .338 with 250 gr. bullets works well in that regard.

The .300 mega mags might impress the hell out of the greenhorns, but to me they just make mush-in-a-skin-sack out of whatever they encounter, and reek of little man syndrome.

.30-06, .338 WM, .375 H&H = all good. Blood tests would indicate normal testosterone levels. Regular users know they can always shave with their axe if they run out of razor blades.

Anything Weatherby = City Slicker. User has fantasies of killing moose at 1500 m. because he'd wet himself if he ever met one up close.

.375 Ruger = Fashionista with pink lace underwear. Owner usually drives a Prius with a stick family on the back window that includes a cat. Has bought coffee at Starbucks more than once.

Feel free to disregard anything past the first two sentences of this post if you're one of those 'sensitive' individuals.

I shot a Ruger M77 with a B&C stock on it and a 2.5-8 Leupold scope in the stock Ruger rings - i prob shot 8 + Bears with it ! I used Nosler Partition Bullets ahead of 4350 powder ! RJ
 
I would consider a model 70 stainless fluted in 338 win mag. According to Winchester's site they make that combo (if anyone would, it would be them). But I can't find one in Canada...if anyone knows of one?

As it stands right now I am looking at a Savage model 114 American classic in stainless fluted 338 win mag and going to order a B&C stock...unless I can find an M70...

Never really looked at Sakos...maybe I'll take a look at one tomorrow just to make sure I don't want to spend the $2000 :)

Totally agree with your line of thinking however, when my banker (wife) allows it.

Look for a used one in like new condition. Many go through EE, but have to be quick for the ones that are well priced. I have owned almost all brands of moderate priced rifles and most work well but if you want something that you can take pride in and maybe pass down someday, Sakos are hard to beat.
 
I would choose the 300 wby, in second place I would choose 300rum. I own both and both are a great choice. I had a 338 win mag and didnt care for it so I sold it. It didnt do anything better then a 300 magnum and dosent shoot as flat. Unless your going to jump up to a 338 lapua or 338 378 wby, Id stick with a 300wby or 300 rum
 
Forget the 338 WM it is neither fish nor fowl and really doesn't do anything very well, it is not as versatile as any of the big 30 Mags (my preference is the 300 Wby, but own and have shot game with the other 2) and it is not a 375 by any stretch of the imagination. If you really want something in between there are 2 that actually do something impressive the 340 Wby (my choice) and the 358 NM or STA, these cartridges make the 338 look pretty sick, which it is in my opinion. The 340 Wby is one of the most impressive killing cartridges I have ever used on game.
Just remember that there is nothing a 338 will do that the 300 Wby won't do better and further away. The 300 RUM is an impressive cartridge but the recoil is a whole serious step up from the Wby, and if you are going to be subjected to that level of recoil, you might as well shoot a 340...........
I believe you said you have an '06, if you load 200 gn Nosler parts or ABs in your '06 with a good stiff load, you would never notice the difference between game shot with that and game shot with a 338..........seriously !! Anyone who says differently is wishing, I've had 3 different 338s and not one impressed me as a good killing cartridge, and not one killed as good as my 300s have, and neither do they have the range and trajectory of the 300s. I just can't yawn wide enough to express my total experience with the 338.
I would take the 350 RM any day over a 338 and have in point of fact, two 350 RMs in my collection and zero 338 WMs............

Had a .338 RUM (very comparable to .340bee) and the only thing it did better than the .338win was make noise and bruise my shoulder. The .338win loaded to 65000psi the same as the Rum gives up maybe 200fps with 20 grains more powder and a lot more recoil! Trade off is not worth it and brass is more expensive and harder to find. IMHO there is a big difference in killing power from a .338 to a .30cal, more than what books might suggest. If you don't require 500 yard shots the .338win is a great choice over the .30's. I think the 30's are the best choice over 7mm magnums and medium bores magnums. When horsepower is needed the .338win a very efficient cartdridge that's hard to beat.
 
I will be picking up my brand new Model 70 Extreme Weather SS in .338 Win on Monday. I ordered it last August and it's finally here! I can hardly wait.
 
Another vote for 338 win mag. As said before, no point in getting a 300 if you have a 30-06. Your only gaining some distance that you will never need in a real hunting situation. Any big game in North America that needs a gun bigger than an 30-06 is an animal that you don't want to take long range shot at anyways. If not a 338 win mag then go for a 375 H&H.
