I am recycling the brass from a range and have run into some brass I cannot identify. I have a handfull of cases marked 338WIN and another batch marked 338Federal. Not listed in my Speer/Barnes/Nosler books but they are all 1994 issue. I found reference to the NEW 338 Federal on line and there seems to be some excitement about it. Both cartridge look the same and measure the same so can I sell them both as 338Fed? These are the ones from a necked up 308 case and are definitely NOT 338Winmag. Thanks.

"...a necked up 308..." That's what a .338 Federal is. A .338 Win Mag(2.500" long) is a belted case and is much longer than a .338 Fed(2.015" long) with a larger case head. .532" vs .473".

Thanks-that helps. I see there is nothing listed there for a 338Winchester although some of the brass is actually marked that way. I am unable to find anything that is 338Win except the Winmag which I have lots of brass for and am familiar with. First time these shorties have shown up in the collection. Looks like I can just list them as 338Fed cuz they spec out identical.
