.338 win mag for deer

I have no doubt you get your deer no problem with the .338 , could you do well with a .243?? Probably, But that fellow who blamed the 7-08 for missing two deer I gotta wonder about.

I guess I better join the club here and push for a moving target apparatus. I think that would be the cats ass.

Yes we are going off topic a bit, but hey, we are enjoying this!

You aren't an F-class or silhouette competitor are you??

How about life size deer targets, marked for kill zone? They taste lousy, but are easy to drag out.
Since it's just us we can do whatever scenario we want. I would submit that holes in paper do not indicate killing power so we can't settle that. Short range bullets holes close together don't make a big game caliber more effective, and don't really even give a reliable indicator of what it will do farther out.
That leaves long range shooting, first round kill zone hits and whatever variable conditions Sask wants to throw at us. Since I already know the ranges, its only fair that you do too. Wind is wind, same for both of us.
In the context of the post ".338 for Deer" all I have to do is demonstrate is that a big gun is every bit the deer hunting rifle as a smaller one. After that, well, nobody ever wanted to shoot against me for money before. :p

My day is one enormous coffee break.

Some of the time, but there would be plenty of opportunities turned down that would be a slamdunk with more gun. I've had 3 .243s, and a handful of 25s so they're not exactly foreign to me. I've never had a BG hunting situation where I was carrying a .300 Mag, an STW or a .375 and said to myself "I wish this was a .243".

I gladly take a range penalty with a muzzleloader in exchange for an extra season. When they come up with a .243 season, I might consider hunting with one. As it is, they don't bring anything special to the party so they stay home unless my kids are useing them.

Well after my trip back to the truck tonight I am even wondering WTF I am doing sitting in the bush with a rifle and frozen appendages.

Kinda the same reason I took up archery, one more month of hunting and no mitts needed.

Seems as I get older and more skilled at shooting, I wanna get closer to the animals. Go figure.

But I cannot claim complete innocence with the desire for small caliber hunting and shooting. There was a time when I did consider a .338 lapua for another toy.:D
