338 win mag OR 300 win mag

Probably already been said (I can't be bothered to analyze all the previous posts), but if I was to choose between the two for deer, moose and black bear, it would be the 338. Can do all that the 300 Win Mag can (in this hunting context), and more. Recoil is no bid deal and not much different than the 300, in fact its case is smaller than the 300 Win Mag (and same as the 7mm Rem Mag). You can load it up and down from 185gr to 300 gr bullets.

Aside from the big bears, it's a can do it all cartridge - and not ridiculous on deer (I have used a 375H&H), although a lot more than the minimum needed for the job.

if you do go to 300 grains, be careful as to WHICH bullet you use- sierra advises that their 300 is a target round only, and no good for hunting- i had this conversation with them when i was looking for a replacement for the 275 semi-spitzer speer- and it would have to have a twist of at least1/10 to stabilize- the browning bar is a 1/12- you want to check your twist when you start getting into the heavies- and thirdly it would be too long when seated- something to consider if you're using a mag fed number

300 win mag 200gr tsx 75 gr 7828 very good medicine for game just got back from africa shot 16 head of game with this combo & have used the 300 win for the last 13 years with 200gr xs molyd up before tsx came out never felt undergunned even once always pefomed excellent.

I'd go with the 300 winchester simply because it's lighter to carry around all day.Either one will drop anything hunted there at any feasible range.

With most models of rifle, the .338win will actually be lighter due to having less metal in the barrel.
