Hey Nutters,

I currently have a Remington 700 XCR Chambered in 300 Win Mag and I want to get a new rifle just for ####es and giggles. Just wondering what your thoughts are on which caliber you would chose to deliver some good moose juice? I want to get one of the mentioned above just to say I have something different.

If I got the 338, I could go with the BAR or MANY other bolt rifles. What would be some good options for a 375?

And last but not least, how is the recoil of these 2 rifles comparable to my 300?

A fellow at work says that a 375 is acutally softer shooting than a 300 because it tends to puch you instead of punching you.

I look forward to all your insights.

A .338 is pretty close to a .300....Might as well jump right past the .338's to the .375's

The .375 RUger is of course the #1 option, but H&H is a good one too.:p

I'd sell the XCR right pronto. Pay the difference and get yourself a Sako 338 Win Mag. Send it out for bedding, barrel floating and a trigger adjustment. Keep it for life and use it for everything, including tiny deer.

Do not waste your time, thoughts, effort, or money on another hunting rifle for life.

The .338 and .375 cover much of the same ground, but then again so do the .338 and .300 Mag. The .375 takes a pretty good stab at doing everything the .338 can do, and most of what the .300 can do as well. It also legally and practically goes up to the very largest of African game, should that be on the menu someday. The .375 is actually a hard to beat choice for shooting tiny animals without tearing them to all hell, and can do it all with one bullet. That's versatility.
If really big and/or dangerous game isn't going to be an option, its tempting to say why bother moving up from the .300 at all.
Right now I'm sitting with 2 .375s, 2 .338s and 4 .300s. I'm aware that that doesn't make a lot of sense.

Stick with the 300 for moose shooting. Plenty good. No need to go bigger unless you have really big critters in your mind. Then step up to a 375 H&H.

After trying to decide that very question with a 300Wby on the rack, and too much time wasted doing so, I ended up going 358 Norma. I wanted to take a step up from the 300, and the 338 seemed like half a step.

I would go one of two ways in your shoes. If you really like your rifle, get it rebarrelled. For great work, reasonable prices and quick turn around my first choice wold be Guntech on here.

If you want to stay factory, there is a very nice Sako 375 on the EE right now that would be VERY tough to beat. Did someone mention that already? :D

By the way, re the "push" vs "kick", co-worker is kinda right with lighter bullets. With the heavyweights, don't believe it! Luckily with today's super bullets like the TSX you don't need a 300 grain bullet to make the 375 sing (for example).

I do not wish to re-start an old argument, but if you're going for a real rifle like a 375 Ruger or even a 375 H&H, then I would not have anything except a CRF.
Why are the smaller bores ok in PF, but as soon as it gets to be a 375, it just has to be a CRF?

It doesn't sound to me that the OP is going to be doing any serious elephant hunting any day soon. Good old push feeds have been pushin' and feedin' just fine in thousands of rifles for many years. The average joe hunting here in NA will do just fine with a 700 in 375.

.

I have taken my 375 H+H in a model 700 to Alaska for 2 bears,Pennisala Brown and Montain Grizzly,Also to the Yukon and Northern B.C for a couple of good moose.
It has never let me down.

The .375 H & H in the Ruger #1 or 45/70 even better. I did see a beauty of a .375 somewhere though, called a Caprivi I think, it was a beauty bolt gun, may have been a Kimber.

My vote goes for the 375H&H. I've had a 300win mag, and I have no use for it seeing as the 30-06 kills just as dead. The 338 is bigger, and it allows one to shoot heavier bullets, but if I'm to go bigger than the 30-06...........it's gonna be bigger (in North America, it is only for kicks and giggles by the way). My two cents............Mike

the 375 pushing 270gr TSX at 2,700 fps is a damn impressive round. I know the 338 is close with 250 gr at roughly the same velocity but........ maybe its the .025 larger frontal diameter.
