Just picked up a nice Ruger No.1 in 338 win mag from CGN. Haven’t loaded for it yet. Any advice on best bullet weights, selection and powders? Hunting elk, moose and hopefully African plains game.

225 Hornady Interlocks or Nosler Partitions over 77gr and 76gr respectively of Reloader 22 = 2890fps in my Sako 75. I found Reloader 22 more consistent then Reloader 19 in my rifle.

I load Nosler 200gr accubond, 210gr partition and Barnes 200gr TSX over Winchester 760/ H414 to a velocity of 2950 fps.
shoots flat with mild recoil and is very accurate in both 338 Win Mags.

depends on the gun- I have an old bar that likes the 250 grain psp backed by 70 grains of 7828- however if I want to step on it a little , just change the 250 for a 275 with the same powder charge- that generates 34 ft pds of recoil and you better be all hunkered down for that one-and it works at 600 yards- the 250 is a sierra but the 275 is a speer- I don't see it listed anymore

Greetings, rhkary!
Coincidentally, I also have acquired a No. 1 in 338 Win Mag. I have just completed an initial run of tests on loads for two bullets; the 200gr Combined Technology Ballistic Silvertip, and the 215gr Sierra SpBt; using IMR 4350 posder.
I have two very promising loads I am going to explore further:

With the 200gr Ballistic Silvertip, 72.5 gr of Imr 4350 gave me an average velocity of 3,059 fps and a 3 shot group of 1 in.

With the 215gr Sierra SpBt, 71.0 gr of IMR 4350 gave an average velocity of 2,956 fps and a 4 shot group of 1.3 in, a 3 shot group of 1 in; with shots 1 and 2 overlapping by half.

I have also bought a box of Hornady 230gr ELD-X bullets I am intrigued by, but so far have not been able to find any published loads for them. Not even in Hornady's load app!
If anyone has worked with these, please share!

I'm really looking forward to the postings on this thread; I hope it garners interest!
