338 Win Mag vs 375 H&H

mmmmm

gatehouse l was always worried about this comparison so l ackley improved my 375 hh just in case, not that it needed it but you never know? there both very potent calibers and with the right bullet will suffice for anybody's needs.

Best between them ??? Niether is Best for everything, one is better at certain tasks and vice versa ;)
For me the 338 WinMag probably has more versatility.....certainly an Excellent thin skinned game cartridge (moose, elk, deer, sheep, whatever) while still having the capability to Use on the Big Bears

The 375 certainly has some History(but so does the 303 Enfield & it's not my 1st choice either:p ) If all I hunted were the Big Bears and could actually squeeze in a trip to Africa every once in awhile I'd say the 375 H&H would be my pick, the Cool Factor is there but then I'd probably take a 458 anyways...those Zebras are BIG :D

Yep for Practicality and in "Bear Country" certainly anyone packing a 338 Winchester cannot be called "undergunned"
I'd say the 338 is my Pick between them.
I guess you figured it out........... I just bought one :p

H&H magnums rule as most other magnums use them as parent cases. The .375 is as cheap as it gets when it comes to shooting "more gun than you really need" I like mine but I'm giving it to my son, my 06 will kill anything that I want to eat.

.375 H&H or what??

Like all questions, context is everything. I'm in the process of buying a .338 because in order of importance:

1. I don't own one.

2. I live in the East and moose hunting is my favourite.

3. Dam'n capable caliber.

What happens next is anybodys' guess....

You mean that I need something other then my 505 Gibbs!:D

What are you getting? :)

Salty, you saw this one coming from a fair piece away--'bout time for a L61R Deluxe. I guess when you find something you like, give in. There's got to be something out around the farm we can sell to raise the cash!

On a more reasonable note, this will be the last one for a while.

Did Sako make a .375 H&H ???

Speaking ofthe 505, it is interesting the way the case neck hols the bullt. Does the sizer die make the neck too small? If so, how do you keep the case from bulging when seating the bullet? I assume the little indentation at the base of the neck is to keep the bullet from moving back during recoil.

+1..............damn 10 character limit

My first post here. Greetings!

This is an interesting thread. I think the best way to look at it is the fact that most of us will hunt in our home Province, or within Canada. So the question is: Between those two calibers, what is the most versatile?

Both are excellent for large game, I think we all know that. But for versability, where I hunt, the .338WM is it. I hunted moose and elk in grizzly country. The .338WM does the trick in a heartbeat.

I am a "one rifle" man, and have owned a .338WM for about twenty years. Is it too much for deer? No doubt, but as I stated, and hunt with one rifle. I have shot many, and most will be amazed the minimal damage it will do if, and only if it is shot right...;)

375 H&H? If you're planning a trip to Africa.
Seriously though, guess it would be good on the most dangerous bears, and maybe as a long-range round for elk.
338 WinMag seems to make more sense for Canada (although kind of a waste if you're out for deer).

Wecome aboard Lonewolf, I too have been useing the 338 for many years (25+) and consider it perfect for the type of hunting I do. Its just right for deer in my book and works great on the big stuff. I don't think we can say one is better, I think you need one of each. If you have to pick one, bigger is better.
