i have an opportuniy to order a tikka .338 win mag for a big discount.

i have a few questions, not worried about recoil

is the .338 win mag a necked up .300 win mag?. i was told a 7mm rem mag is a necked down 300 win mag

I want this gun, if i do order it, for a moose/bear/elk only gun. or should i be looking for a 300 RUM or the .338 RUM?

any tips on bullet grain choices to look at and bullet types that work well for the game described would be great.

338 Win Mag is a necked up 7mm Rem Mag, Neither is the same case as the 300 Win Mag, which is a tad longer to the shoulder and overall than Either the 338 or the 7MM Rem Mag. There are 5 direct relatives of the one family, one is a wildcat, but quite popular in long range circles for many years. They are as follows: 264 Win Mag, 7mm Rem Mag, 30-338 Mag, 338 Win Mag, 458 Win Mag. Regards, Eagleye.

to add to what Eagleye posted, the 338 Win Mag is one hell of a big game round.

Aint much a guy cant do in the world with a 250 gr. Nosler @ 2700 fps ;)

I'd say the 338WM will do everything you need, without the powder and blast of an "ULTRAMAG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Do it.

.338 Win Mag is an awesome big game round for any big game hunting that you might do in North America. (and it's not that bad to handle).

I have one in a Tikka 695 and absolutely love it.

which gun

what would be a better gun for the calibre......... if i do buy a .338 WM, i have a choice of a lmainate stainless tikka T3, or the Stainless/ syn. tikka T3

i also have a eye on a new O/U shot gun or Beneli Nova Pump, so im trying to decide. Also got to factor in that in May im buying a 100% camo'd 10/22 in realtree hardwoods i belive it is, so i gotta lot of decisions

God i love guns, so addicting.

As said before, the 338 win mag is an awesome cartridge. Its hard to pick a more proven big game cartridge. I even shot my whitetail with one this year 250 gr partition at 2700 fps, did a nice clean job of it too.

Of course I also have a 300 RUM and I feel this cartridge is under appreciated. Sure its a big case and eats a lot of powder but the trajectory is about as flat as you can get and it packs a whole bunch of energy out at incredible distances.

I once heard it said that it takes 2000 ft lbs of energy to kill a bull elk cleanly. If you take a look at a 270 or 30-06 they drop below the 2000 ft lbs mark at about 200 yards +/-. The 300 ultra mag provides more than 2000 ft lbs of energy out past 500 yards. Now I'm not saying you should go out and shoot elk at 500 yards but it does say something about the capabilities of the cartridge.

I don't have my reloading manual in front of me but I know that the 338 doesn't deliver as much energy as the 300 RUM. The one thing the 338 has is the larger frontal area, for a real good slap.

Either way each provides you with more gun than you'll ever need in North America, buy them both

Go with the LS Tikka T3 for a 338WM. Its a bit heavier than the SS model. If you want the SS version, Tikka has a new SS camo T3 out this year. I have 2- 270WSM in the LS models and love them. My plan is to get the Sako m75 Grey Wolf in a 338WM sometime soon. If not I'll get it in a Tikka T3 LS or a Sako m75 SS. Try the Accubonds or TSX bullets for the 338WM.

For a scope, Leupold VX2 3x9 or 4x12 is fine. I have a new 4x12 with the LR duplex reticle waiting for a new rifle. I prefer the VX 3 scopes with the B&C reticles, but this 4x12 VX2 was a GREAT BUY!

Good luck with your new rifle.

the 338 is a powerful round. i dont use mine much as i havent needed the power, yet. i think the 210-225 gr works best for deer and up, and the 250gr really stomp any thing.

as for scope i run a 3-9leupold on mine but a fixed 4 or smaller variable would work too. dont go bigger than a 3-9 or 3.5-10 on it you dont need it.

Another Vote for the 338 Win Mag !
Awesome Cartridge as I'm discovering;)
Mine really likes the 225 Nosler Accubonds........I suspect this Spring's Bear won't :D

My favourite gun is a sako 75 338 WM. 250 gr nosler partition for moose, 200 for deer.
I never worry about anything not being dead enough.

338

I had the throat opened up on my M700 338WM and i can get a 225 partition going 2950 fps with 78.5gr of H4350, to me that is an awsome combo for anything. I have had the gun for 25 years and like a bumb-ass i sold it but was able to buy it bake and now i would never sell it.

338 Wm

As everyone said before a great round when I had my Sako 75 SS all i used were 250 noslers for everything shot flat enough and took all game here in the Yukon! Both these taken with this combo.

I had the opportunity to shoot/sight in a few Tikka T-3's in .338WM and the recoil is substantial but not unpleasant. If you are recoil sensitive you can add weight or switch to a limbsaver. The laminate is slightly heavier and the muzzle jump is less dramatic. I have also shot the same rifle with a muzzle break, it had about the same recoil as a .308... with the volumn turned way up... use hearing protection.
