There is a good write up about that rig in a recent shooting magazine. Keep Obtuned on speed dial though with barrel life around 700-800 rounds:eek::eek::eek:. As soon as you get comfortable with a load you'll need a new one to go with your new barrel.

The biggest drawbacks I see to it on top of barrel life, or total lack there of, is that the brass is poor at best and has an even shorter life.
This is not a new caliber, Skip Talbot and #### Davis both took 505 Gibbs and necked it down to 338 about 10 years ago and found , yes with the 250 gr SMKs that were available velocity was about what the XT guys are claiming, but barrel life was none existant.
505 Gibbs is the parent case for 408 Cheytac, Kirby Allen and Richard Graves have been working with the same basic cartridge for a couple of years now and are finding the same issues.
Currently the brass is so poor of quality I have severe doubts about the accuracy claims that XT is extolling.
From personal experience, and there are several of us on this very forum who have and shoot them, 338LAI is a better option all the way around.
I just sold my own 338LAI to a friend, knowing it had 1500 rounds through the barrel and it still shoots 1/4moa
We know from Summerland that 2000 yards is easy with the 338LAI.
We know that a 300 gr SMK that leaves the muzzle at 3085 fps has over 6000 ftlbs of energy and we only need about 112 grains of powder to do all this, the XT uses 15% more and is using a lighter bullet, which physics tells us will loose speed and energy faster and will wind drift more.
Having seen quite a number of these rifles at the SHOT Show, as they seemed to be in almost everyones booth showing something, honestly I was wholly unimpressed with the overall quality and attention to detail for the money.
The sales guys seemed to allude to alot, but were unable to answer many questions that we already had answers to.
In short for less money I can sell you more rifle and you will be able to get components, reloading dies and vital info readily, no smoke and mirrors here.
And we are in Canada so if you have an issue, no paperwork and waiting years to get it back maybe.

Thanks for the reply and links to alternate resources guys, I guess I got excited about the numbers & never second looked into the reliability of that cailber.

Don't sell the 408Chey Tac concept dead just yet. On the US side, new batches of brass are being made. Will they be better/stronger? Anyones guess.

There is quite a bit in Canada now with the guys from ABC in Salmon Arm. I shot their Chey tacs with their bullets and they shot just fine. No idea on brass life though. They can certainly supply components. Maybe even make some brass.

This wildcat is not new. There was another version out for a few years from another gunsmith/rifle builder. Suggested he could push a 300gr Mk over 3300fps in a 30" pipe. That would be a toasty load. viersco.com for info.

I haven't even finished my 338 Mystic which is my version of the 338-300RUM improved. Similar wildcats have already been built and their results are very similar to the 338Lapua Improved. Think 338 Edge with a sharp shoulder and less body taper and longer throat.

The numbers are impressive on all of these but the running costs gets up there. Big reason my project has stalled out.

There is little doubt that LR ballistics are superior the larger the cal/heavier the bullet but wear is also increased and so is costs.

Now that I have pushed my 223 to a mile and 6.5 Mystic to 2400yds, I don't feel the need for boomers anymore. Bullets in smaller cals are right on the heels of the large ones and unless you want to put a hurt on something, the smaller cals might just be more accurate.

But do ATR's guns come with a free chicky-boo?

OK, this is from the 2008 SHOT show, and no she doesn't come free with a 338 XT either.

Nope, just guns that really shoot. No fruited barrels or useless brakes either.
I do have a photo of Glock in skivvies yakking on the great white telephone from the Summerland shoot though that I could post with 1 of our guns if you like.

Please no posting of glock.

:slap:the vivid memories, and the fact that he sounded like wounded wilderbeast as his body was rejecting the alcoholic abuse he gave it.......Along with the ever ingrained into my soul sounds of the hurling out the door of the truck on the highway....... still haunts me to this day!!! haha :slap:

Spoke to a few good buds over on the US side. The new batches of 408 brass are said to be very good (just whats been passed on, I haven't had any in my hand).

If this is true then there is promise on the horrizon! :D

One second we're talking about barrel burners and Hooters chicks, the next second I get dragged into this from Summerland... What gives here. Then, I read further that Gunboy would pay top dollar for a real gun that cooks barrels faster then most could do load development. Can we stay on track here.

Sidenote; I would have been fine had someone not tried incredibly hard to give me alcohol poisoning... At least Brad had my back or else it would have been my bare AZZ laying between 2 wilderbeasts he took a picture of instead of his buddy. LOL!!! Ohhh the memories. Goodtimes.

I can't believe I missed that booth at the shot show. I thought I got posters and autographs of all the hots chicks there.

Im new to shooting small targets at a great distance , however in that time I have learned somethings. I buy the best custom rigs I can afford, build the best ammo I can make and the rest is up to me.Alberta Tactical has furnished me with the not only the equip that i need but the support with load development for all my rifles. Find a builder who shoots his own product and backs it up with facts not fiction and is Canadian and you will find 1/4 min. accuracy and with the support you can't get with large mass producing companys
