Anyone shoot Coyote with a 338LM?

Just picked one up and want to give it a try. Just curious if it actually does a lot of damage, or is a 285gr HP is just too heavy to even notice the small coyote? I figure go with a buddy and get those coyotes that seem to stand at the 400yr mark and just eye you up. Just a little too far for the .223/204 but almost seems a little close for a 338.

I'm not sure at what distance I will zero at yet. I figure I'll have to shoot a gopher or 3 with it too, for science.

Was thinking the Horndy 250grain or 285grain BTHP.
Would opening up the distance a bit make the bullet more effective on the smaller target?

Do they make a Varmint grenade type bullet in 338? lol

400 yards is too far for 223/204? If you can't hit 'em at 400 yards with those why would be able to with a 338?

It's not too far to hit them, but those little bullets aren't hitting with much force, a 204 is already too small for a shoulder hit at 150 yards. And then there is the wind blowing those little bullets around that much more.

Just use a piece of sh*t 225 gr soft point for a 338 REM at about 4000fps ... When it comes apart at the tip of the yotes nose on impact ... VAPOURIZE !!!

See if you can turn the whole yote into spray

Try something a little less. Maybe a 308 or 6.5x55. I have a 338 Edge and for the cost of ammo I would not waste the money for yotes. I would suspect you will knock the yote into the next county.

Or like when I watched my brother use an 8x57 on a porcupine when we were kids. One second it was sitting in the tree. The next it was about 20 feet out in the field. Shredded.

Hmm, good idea, I wonder if I can find load data for that.
Pictures for sure.

Why bother with something smaller, it's what 4$ for decent factory ammo, or under 2$ for good hand loads?
Sounds like the perfect price to shoot anything. I didn't buy it to save money, I'd think most would agree a round like 338 is for fun.

Why would you want to waste a $150 coyote hide by blowing it up with a big rifle. At this time of the year when they are not prime shoot them with what ever you like but when they are prime a whole different story. You obviously have not shot alot of coyotes with a 204 if you think 150yds is pushing the limits.

I agree .204 is deadly out to 300 yards maybe further but I have only gotten the chance at one at 300. Did the dance and dropped about 25 yards from where I hit em.

I've shot a couple of coyotes with my .338 using 250 SMK's. At close range (~200y), there is so much energy that the bullet does nothing in the way of expansion... Headshots on the other hand...

I developed a load with 250gr Accubonds for hunting applications... Looking forward to seeing what these'll do.

Tikka6xc;8599897 Who cares about a 204 vs coyote when were talking about .338[/QUOTE said:
The OP says he is using a 338 because the smaller calibers like the 204 are marginal at 150 yds. The good thing about the western provinces is we can use whatever caliber we chose so if he wants to blow them up with a large caliber all the power to him but I still think it's a waste.
