338LM for a coyote?

Thats great and all, and you're right you can't kill something deader than dead. I can't say its considered inhumane or unethical to use a larger calibre becuase that animal is dying much faster. But still there is something about it that just doesn't feel right to me.

I'm an avid shooter and I have seriously gotten into Predator hunting. I hunt Coyote with a .308 because its all I have. I plan on getting either a .223 or 22-250 soon. With that said my .308 seldom goes through the coyote, usually expands and stops because I use Nosler hunting tips. It also usually only knocks open a 1.5" hole at most.

It's just that maybe the idea of "gibbing" an animal, or blowing it in two pieces to me doesn't seem necessary. That video is hardly entertaining or exciting, its more likely to enrage all the anti's out there. Yes we are controlling the population, yes they are vermin to a degree, but they shouldn't be treated as "gophers". Coyotes are highly intelligent and adaptive animals and should be respected to some degree. I always thought hunting was a fairly civilized sport until I moved to redneck northern alberta where people drive around looking for game, and blow open coyotes with .338 Lapua. I would equate blowing small game wide open with a large calibre rifle like a .338 or a .50 to kids playing with fire, or burning ants with a magnifying glass. It seems like an overly excessive, childish, immature thing to do.

Should a person hunt bear with a cannon? Maybe a rocket launcher for moose? C4 for fishing? As stated by a previous poster .338 Lapua was designed for the purpose of shooting human targets at 1000+.

In a day when the country is full of anti-gun, anti-hunting sentiment, I don't think putting videos like that on youtube are going to do much to further our cause. Or leaving blown open Coyote carcasses in the woods for that matter. In his defense the video he was going to skin these. If he wrecks the pelt in the process its his problem, but seriously think of the money he would save if he used a smaller, cheaper calibre, and the money he would make on the fur without the damage from the .338.

With that said, I personally have left many a coyote out in the bush because frankly its legal to do so in Alberta, and also I don't want to haul around a mange filled dog!

I love watching coyote videos, and I have watched most of his channel, but I'm doing because I love watching Coyote calling of any kind. But the whole "whoo-hoo look at my .338" doesn't entertain me, neither does the "hey look at the size of the hole we blew in this guy". Also if you watch them carefully in several videos these guys are shooting with farms and farmhouses directly behind their targets. Morons.

I'm not here to tell you what to do, nor am I here to troll. I just want to say how I feel about this type of hunting, because I keep coming across this where I live in Northern Alberta. If all you have is .338 then like me you haven't much choice at this point. Fill your boots. But I would recommend looking at something smaller in the future as it will get expensive as time goes on.

I wouldn't shoot a crow with my .308.
Try to use the right tool for the job.

Couple things:
Most of us are just kidding. I feel just like you for the most part, but am just having a little fun.
Coyotes here are a big problem. about a year ago they just about got my dog. Now I shoot evey one I can. during fur season and out of season it make no difference to me. Keep the furs if you can. If not I take them anyway.
Thirdly I agree whole heartedly on your opinion on posting videos that are in bad taste. Any video that portays behavier that is not consistant with the values taught in the hunter safety program is a huge disservice to gun nutz everywhere. It's the same as driving around town with a moose head hanging out the back of your truck with the tongue hanging out or walking around town with bloody coveralls. Not that we should all hide, but rather conduct yourself like a responsable individual. That's what will bring more people to this sport. If someone takes issue with hunting in an ethical and safe manner........Well that's a whole other issue.

Don't get me wrong I agree with you on the whole shoot them when you can thing too - I'm not against it but you certainly put my stance on conduct more eloquently.

I'm from Cold Lake and coyotes and wolves are so bad here we have a bounty on them in this Municipality. I do my part as best as I can.

Last time I shot a coyote with my .308 the hole was massive.

9/10 times we all as hunters use the correct cal for the job but every now n than.. Someone has a little redneck in em.

Ever shoot a gopher with a 22-250 ? It's something else.

Check out this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqFXmNr5M_s

These guys are firing at a coyote with a .243 and a .338 directly towards a farm. The farm is maybe another 500m beyond the coyote. Just a little unsafe.

and this one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1qArayYkns almost directly at a farmhouse. Ricochet from a .338 would be potentially lethal to this farmhouse. And before anyone says "its snow" I've seen 7.62 and higher bounce off ice.
