Well I loaded up some of my test rounds with the 93gr charge weight of H1000 with the 300gr Berger Hybrid

I had 20 shots to see what it would do.

It took me a dozen just to get on paper @ 200 yards where I was comfortable trying to get a group.

Mirage was horrendous even with magnification turned down.

Velocities were 2800 , 2813,2801,2794 and 2782 which aren't bad but could be better.

Here is the 5 shot group that wound up being my only:



It is a new rifle , it may be that it is just finally settling in after 50 shots.What does everyone think about that??

I am not 100% confident that I will continue with this combination.I may go one more crack with loads at 92,93 and 94 grains and see what happens.

If I can't muster better than what I have here now I think I will try some SMK's as I have always had good luck with Sierra bullets and less luck with Bergers.

The real fear is buying more new Lapua brass!!! :eek:

To be honest the bark on this setup is much worse than the bite, the chassis system seems to fit well and doesn't punch to bad on the bench at all.

I am wanting those size of groups at 4-500. :)

Maybe on a cooler day with less mirage it'll tighten up, if not I'll work another aspect of the load.

With my initial ladder test the best node was from 92-95 grains.My velocities today were up 40-50 ft/sec. but still would have be in the 94 grain area.

Outside temperature was also a bit higher this time but I am using H1000, supposedly temp stable.

I Think I was pretty consistent/not pulling or flinching during the ladder test

I didn't hace great results with the 300gr. Bergers either and I was treading the same ground as you with H1000 and Lapua brass. SMK's shot into 1/2" at 200 meters. I'd give them or the Scenars a serious look, they are way easier to get to shoot than the Bergers. My load is 91gr. H1000 and 300gr. MK's @2770fps.
 
Not sure how far off the lands you are with your load but mine shoots great at 25thou off which is 3.041" base to ogive for mine.
 
Well my COAL to touch the lands would be 3.821"

My COAL is 3.755" in order to fit the magazine, this measures to 2.921" on my comparator. Approximately .066" off of the lands.

So, from my quick math from my numbers I would need a 3.796" COAL to be .025 off , 2.962" on my comparator.

Kinda went with the hybrids so I wouldn't have to single feed.I am sure i can get tigher groups with some more testing, maybe.



Suppose I could lengthen them but then the magazine goes bye-bye, then will have to do a new ladder test I guess.

If still may just go with the SMK's , I should be able to still mag feed but get closer to the lands.

Top, was the first , I remember that for sure, and I believe the lowest was #3 or #4.

Again I must say that maybe mirage was doin a number on me, the horizontal spread is totally acceptable for me at this stage.

Shot a few , let rifle rest, shot a few more, rest again, then the last 5, and then 3 more right after that 5.Was just shooting a metal plate after for poops and giggles at the end.

Maybe I shouldn't abandon it yet, this is the first 50 shots for this rifle, maybe it does have to settle in a bit.

Just a suggestion I'm no pro or anything. But I shoot my 338 ladder tests at 500 yards. It's easier to see your vertical dispersion. Plus my 338 shoots 1" @100yrds and 1.5" 300yards. So what I do is find an accuracy node at 300yards. Then I set up a piece of 4x8 plywood at 500 yards then do my ladder test there. I still need to do some tweaking but I was able to print a 12" group at 1250yards which makes my bone stock rifle a sub moa rifle. To all you long range shooter ya ya I get it 12" isn't real great lol. But like I said its not a high end rifle and its not a custom rifle. Just a stock savage with an inexperienced long range shooter on the trigger lol. But I believe many years of reloading helped me obtain my first decent grouping at distance
 
Oh I would but I even had trouble keeping on a 4' x 4' sheet during my ladder test @ 250.

And no , It wasn't the shooter. ;)
