.338LM vs. .300WM $ ?

True, but it still doesn't make it a good idea. Now if I was really hungry...

No labels required, some people think it's ok, some don't. Once you start shooting more you'll see how easy it is to pooch a shot, regardless of how good you get. From that perspective 300-400 yards would be as far as I'd shoot to fill a tag. I think what some people fail to consider is you can't screw up just a little. A little is shredding one of it's legs at very long range instead of a kill.

About the Magnum, not saying not to, just saying make sure you shoot a few to get an idea of how it will be to live with. I shoot my WM while the .308 or .223 cools down. It could stand a brake but at 16 lbs it's not too bad to shoot, 40-50 rounds can become a bit of a chore though.

got ya, Red. i appreciate your constructive criticism, ...without attitude ;)
a magnum is still in the thinking/windowshopping stage. just looking for input from more experienced shooters.

ok, just a few more newb questions...

1. so, if i buy a savage in 300WM and upwards i can swap in a 338LM barrel myself if i have a headspace gauge and 338LM boltface? and i can switch back to 300WM [or whatever the original caliber] also, with the correct headspace gauge for it too?

2. many owners claim moa and sub-moa accuracy with factory barrels, so why is rechambering a 338WM factory barrel to 338LM a bad idea?

3. Jerry, i did not see prices on your website for adding a thread to one of your in-stock barrels for a compensator, did i miss something? and [if question 2 is feasible] what is the cost of rechambering a factory barrel?

...thanks for your patience and input guys.

Yes, it's easy to swap barrels on a Savage 10/110 action. Breaking the barrel nut loose for the first time can be quite difficult though. You will need a good quality large vice mounted on a solid bench. You can just use the vice and wood blocks but after taking that route myself I'd suggest an action wrench as well. Head spacing only took 15 min. or so.

If the barrel shoots well I guess having it rechambered would be fine. I have no idea what problems could arise while performing such a job.

If you follow the links at the bottom of Jerry's reply you can see the cost of the gunsmithing services he can have done for you.

thanx Red. i'll check it out.

o.k., since nobody but Redshooter responded i guess you pros are getting a bit tired of the newbie 20 questions thread, but i'll just ask question #1 once more...
how small can i go down to for a donor action? will 300 WM work?
and can i swap barrels/bolt faces back to original if i have head space guages? and does anyone know where to get a 338LM bolt face, or is it available just from the manufacturer? [and who sells headspace gauges?]

o.k., i promise, that's it for the questions...

All your questions have already been answered or info is available on Savage and personal websites.

The only thing left is for you to decide what you want. Making it is pretty straightforward.

1) this is what I want to have in my hands
2) this is my budget
3) this is how I plan to use it

Without these defined, we are just going round in circles and people stop posting.

Jerry

+1 to Jerry's questions. How long do you want to go and do you want to hunt with it? Frontier has a Savage LRH in 6.5x284 for $869, which should be good for some really long shots.

Oh, and for the bolt; same except for face. Here are 2 Savage bolts: a 270 and 338LM next to each other.

FFS, buy a Savage 300 Win Mag action, get a bolt head and barrel from Jerry and go shoot something. This is like verbal masturbation, a lot of effort for nothing. - dan

ya, o.k. dan, i get it. i think "pablum" might be a better word than masterbation. i suspected i'd ruffle some feathers looking for the finer points, pricing, sources, etc. ...so much for "there's no such thing as a stupid question".
i figured you long range dudes would be happy to spoon feed a newb on a detail or two from the world you're passionate about.

thanx adiel for the bolt face pics, [and the gentler approach].
