338wm or 35 whelen , why?

If I had to pick from the OP's original two choices, it would be the 338-06 hands-down. However, I went with a CZ550 9.3x62, and won't be looking back.

Why not just own them all and take whatever meets your whim on the day?

I've got the .35Whelen, .338WM (best all-around cartridge in this here country), 8x57 (yessir), 9.3x62, .375H&H.

I don't feel under-gunned with any of 'em, and I like to get them all out of the safe, time to time...

I agree with the above post on the best all-around cartridge, another vote for the 338 win mag, its my go to gun. Plus better bullet selection for factory and for handloading.

I prefer the mild recoil and big downrange thump from the 35Whelen. Being a non-belted casing also eliminates any problems with rounds slipping and locking in an internal magazine. 225-250gr pills are amazing on game.

But, it's much easier to find shelf ammo for the 338WinMag.

If it was to be a calibre 'footrace', for me, a closer comparison would be between a 338WM and for a 35 cal, a 358NM. Nothing against a 338WM but I was never ecstatic about it either. Had one in a Mannlicher style Sako, worked well on Moose but it was put up for 'adoption'. Now, a have the 358NM, two of them actually.

9.3x62 here as well. Canada is mentioned several times on the 9.3x62 Wikipedia page. Its understandably a well loved cartridge by Canadians.

I saw some 9.3x62 in Canadian tire lately ..... not a single box of rimfire .... any rimfire , but they got 9,3x62 :)

* insert one of gates's rants about how the 375 ruger is going to be the new king *

remove any mention of 375 ruger and insert 9,3x62 ..... :D :D :D

.35 Whelen. It hits harder and kills faster. And it's in a handier package than any. 338 Win.

This will need some explaining...well, lots actually. And I do own both.

.338 win mag is a better all arounder, if you can handle the recoil.

Personally, I use both of these much less since I got a 9.3 x 62.

But an honest assessment is, that if I was shooting past 300 yards, the .338 win mag would still be the better all-arounder.
