I would like to no if eny one has eny info on these guns .I have a 22hornet with 1-16 twist and a savage if it is a 340 i'm not sure .My Q is the little strap at the front of the forarm that go's around the barrel can it be removed with out a problem in shooting

how does the gun shoot with the barrel band? If it is grouping then why bother, unless you are planning to put it into a new stock. If the gun shoots without the band and you are happy take it off.

You can use the band/screw to apply/reduce tension on the forend barrel to stock contact that may be played with to help tune in your rifle.

My 340 has a barrel band.

I removed it, bedded it, and floated the barrel, i cant say it shoots any better/worse.

I have two 340s with barrel bands. One in 30-30, the other in .22 hornet.
Both are capable of MOA accuracy or better with good handloads.
I have found that keeping the barrel band tightened just past finger tight and not chinched up smoking tight gives the best accuracy. Tighten it so it is snug but don't crank on it. Make sure the bolt in the recoil lug is tightened a bit more but don't force it.
If you have to glass bed these, start with the space behind the recoil lug and make sure the bottom of the recoil lug is not touching the stock. Sometimes that is all it takes to improve accuracy rather than a full glass bedding.

I have never seen a 340 that didn't have a barrel band, or at least didn't have one at one time.

Alright, I see where I'm getting mixed up. I just opened up my 70's parts manual and I see the little barrel band.

Here I was looking for a barrel band that actually wraps around the wood like the old military rifles or some of the older rimfires, that little wee thing don't count!!!!!:D:redface:

And that is what the defendant's lawyer in a paternity suit said while dropping his clients pants and introducing the small member as evidence.
While cross examining the lady making the the lawyer stood about five feet away and asked the victim how such a small member could have gotten anyone pregant. She spit, hit him in the eye and said "that little thing can spit further than that!" she won the suit.

And the moral of the story is that if it does the job - it counts....

I have worked on several 340's and have always had better results with removing the band. It's not very well built and it's hard to maintain a consistent tension on it.

This is the Thudy-Thudy 340 that I play with, it's a fun little rifle.

Just ordered a Willians FP model peep sight for my Stevens 325 C I also ordered a slightly higher front sight for the rifle also. Properly sighted with some Hornady lever evolution ammo (.30-30) it should be a nice little brush gun with 150 yard potential.
