Ok I,'m gearing up to load up some ammo for a 340 Weatherby Magnum, but want to hear from some of you out there, about your experiences with powders and loads for this cartridge.
I am going to be using a 26.5" Gaillard barrel, thinking of using 250g spitzer boattails (seirra's or interlocks) or similar and also a maybe play with some 225's (SST's or interlock) in the same bullet design.
I want to get the 250's up in the 2900 - 3000fps range or more if possible.

I know there are slower and supposedly better powders but I got the best results from IMR4831. I've had 3 340s and currently have a 338 and 338/378. With 225s 3100 fps is no prblem and 2900+ with 250s. 3000 fps is a bit optomistic. This powder also gave extreme accuracy with both bullets. I used only Noslers in mine as the Hornadys would not hold together. Now we have Barnes and other high quality bullets. If you're going to hunt with it I'd suggest only premium bullets.

Yes, I was being rather optimistic when I mentioned 3000fps+ with 250's, but thought I'd see what people had to say or comment.
I was looking at these powders so far, but have not made any final decisions yet.
(not in any particular order of choice, except for powder burning rates, first listed will be the fastest and up from there, the #'s in brackets stands for the burning rate that these powders are listed in comparison to all others)
1). (90) IMR 4350.

7). (102) Hod 1000
8). (103) RL25
I would have liked it if there was some place to find Norma MRP? which I understand that RL-22 is somewhat comparable.

So having this info, what say you's out there? I want to hear from you if you ever had or reloaded a 340 Wby Mag.
Thank you MTM.

The Norma MRP is available from Dave Friesen. (bcredneck.com) I believe it to be very close to the optimum powder in the 340 WBY. RL22 is similar but not the same. If you can get your hands on some MRP, you will be pleased, I'm sure. Regards, Eagleye.

sako 340 weatherby

I use AA3100 88g in my sako with a 24" barrel and get around the 2950 to 3000 fps with the chrony that I use. The testing is with hornady 250g interlocks and I do use this load also with the nosler part. when I go huning for bigger stuff other wise for deer I use the hornady. I did go up to 90g of AA3100 but there was no increase. This load is accurate in my rifle. As the norm start at the lower and work up.
