.340 Weatherby

Hey guys, I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of my .340 Weatherby Magnum Mark V Sporter that I ordered back in January. Any weatherby shooters out there with opions on this caliber and rifle? I have never handled or shot a weatherby. I also loaded some 225 grain nosler accubond bullets with 81 grains of RL19 pushing it, what bullets, loads are you guys shooting? :canadaFlag:
 
The .340 Weatherby is one ###y number - long and leggy and goes like crazy. I wanted one, but a nice one was too much $$$$ so I opted for a .338 RUM. The 225 accubond is the way to go and your load sounds just fine. Check a couple of reloading sites, but I am not sure that you will improve on that load much. H1000 may give you a bit more, but it is a matter of experimentation.
 
here are the loads that I tested in my 340.
It is a Sako with a 24"barrel

wthby factory 200g was 3194fps
reloads
200gr hornady federal 210mag primers(all reloads)
AA3100 91g 2967fps
imr4350 84g 3032
imr4831 86g 2931
RL19 90g 3101

250g hornady sp(I also use nosler part. 250g with these loads)
AA3100 88g 2889fps
imr4350 80 2819
imr7828 90 2900
RL19 84 2814

Ialso used a product called Copper Melt(bought at gun show) and it was to increase the velocity which it did only in this rifle and none of the rest that I tested.
AA3100 88g 2955fps

I use the AA3100 88g in the 250g hornady or nosler part. as my hunting loads.

I had my first and only exposure to a .340 a couple of years ago and came away fairly impressed. The rifle was a synthetic stocked MK-V, which fed the handloads slick as butter, accuracy was all you could ask for, and recoil was less than I anticipated, as I expected it to be more on order of my .375, but instead I was like the little cartoon Martian, "But where is the earth shattering KaBoom???" I don't recall what the load was or even the bullet weight, but it was as much a pleasure to shoot as a powerful rifle can be, I'm sure you will be happy with yours.
 
IMHO the 340Wby is the best balanced .338 out there.

Plenty fast enough.
Long enough to digest super heavy bullets.
Recoil is manageable for any halfway determined shooter.
Feeds great from just about anything.
Its very accurate.
The Weatherby brass is both first rate and worth the entry fee.

I hunted for 10 years with the 340 and very little else.
Not much not to like. ;)

I have since moved on to faster 338's (Rum and Edge).
Straight up, unless you are hunting 1000+yards they bring nothing to your long range capabilities over the 340.

How did you find the accuracy with the 24" barrel? I'm looking to have a .340 Weatherby built on a BRNO 602, and I'm debating barrel length.
 
with my sako 24" accuracy is very good. I use to be able to touch three shots but I have not shot is that much lately as I have I have been using other rifles. Still not for sale.
 
210's with H-4831 for 3150fps, RL-22 with 225's for about 3000fps and IMR-7828 with the 250's for about 2900.

Those combos have been stupidly accurate in 6 or so 340's my buddies and I owned. My load data is in storage or I would dig it up for you.
