340 Weatherby ?

I've been reading up about it recently, seems like the cartridge for a one gun battery. Ross Seyfried did an article on it many years ago and claimed if it couldn't be hunted with a .340 he didn't want to hunt it. Wish I could find a copy of that article.

Awesome all round cartridge! Terry Weiland wrote: " The .340 Weatherby combines the sheer power of the .375H&H with a trajectory that is flatter than the 7mm Remington"

That statement could be debated but there is no doubt the .340 is flat and hits hard!

I have one and love it.Its was my go to gun when I was still hunting. Its taken coyotes, deer, moose and gophers. They pack a mean punch on target and well I love it!! As for ammo cost if you reload, find some 300WBY brass with a rem headstamp, run it thru a lee sizeing die with a tapered expander, nice light fireforming load on gophers then have at er. There isnt any thing on this continent I wouldnt use it on...I always had one shot kills with it..

A great cartridge, but if you want a mid-bore for North America, the .338 Win Mag will do. If the WinMag isnt enough, a .375 or .40 cal (.416 Rem, Rigby) would be my choice. Used Weatherby rifles seem affordable, but the brass/cartridges are pricey. David Petzal, Field & Stream rifle editor, did a great article on the mid-bores, but ends up recommending the Winnie.

I remember that article well! It was in Guns and Ammo somewhere around 30 years ago...I read it and it led me to use a .340 for years. I believe it was in that article that he described shooting an elk that was practically in the next postal code, while hunting with Elmer Keith. I was a Seyfried fan, and his articles introduced me to several guns that I might not have tried otherwise, like the .416Rigby, the .340, fast-twist-rate .22-250's and others. I eventually decided that the .340 did not really do much more than the .338Win, certainly not enough to make the cost of powder and brass, the increased noise and the wickedly fast recoil worthwhile. But if you absolutely must have the biggest, baddest and fastest hunting rifle around...well, today you'd probably buy the Lapua. BUT...if you also want it to be cool and classy, you still have to go with the Weatherby. :)

I have .340 MKV sporter. I love it. It has only been a paper and water bottle blaster so far. The ammo is exspensive but i reload so its not too bad. I love the looks of the weatherby's and don't think they can be beat in that department. The recoil is there but i don't think it is that bad but your definitley not going to shoot it all day. Is it worth the extra cost over a 338 win.....i say yes just because i love the weatherby cartridges.

If you want a long range hunting rifle with a lot of punch it is hard to beat a .340 WBY with a 26 inch barrel. It's a very potent accurate round.

mine is in a sako with 24" brl and get 2950fps with 250r hornady spirepoints. Also use partitions when hunting moose/elk. I used it a lot when I was younger and did not mind carring a 10# plus rifle but as Iam getting older I starting to like lighter rifles. I shot a lot moose/elk with this round and always had good results. My reload was made up of AA3100 88g and a federal mag primer, which I got this load from one of layne ?????? arcticles. I did go up to 91 gr but there was no increase in velocity, actually it went down at 91g.

The 340 WM is a great cartridge, very under valued in the realm of the mid bores, just surprise's me that Roy did not make a 35 cal Weatherby cartridge, but I gues there really was no bullets that would stand up to the Weatherby velocities?
Another great Roy cartridge in the 378 WM! Built on the SHultz and Larsen action for the first 2 years, before the Mark V action was developed!

Dale Z!

I expected him to show up by now.

It's a great round but it means a heavier rifle and more expensive brass to start off with. It kicks ass on medium to heavy non-dangerous game in Africa and everything in North America. Hard to argue with a 225gr bullet at 3000 FPS or a 250 at almost 2900 FPS.
