I'm going elk hunting and I can't decide what rifle to take:rolleyes:

Do I take my browning Stainless stalker in 300winny 3-9X50 Leupold

OR

My Weatherby mark V in 340wby same scope

Not too tough a question. 340 all the way. I've only shot one Elk with the 340 but it worked very well. 225 Nosler from about 175 yrds. dropped where it stood. 6x6 bull hit center of chest facing me.

340 WBY all the way, if the recoil doesn't bother you, this is a great caliber for Elk and Moose or big bears.

Nothing wrong with either...both are great elk calibers, nobody can argue with that. I'd pick the rifle that I was more confident/proven with.

I think both are suitable. I would love to try the .340 Wby with 275gr Swift A-Frames. That would be something else!

Well....Thanks for all the advice....Both rifles shoot equally well...Don't for see shots longer than 300 yards...The 300 winny has a few kills to it's name....The 340 has never been out hunting...

I have always used 180gr. Speer grand slams in the 300 on top of 71grs of IMR4350

I tried 225gr. Barns X bullets in the 340 and it didn't like them.....4"to5" groups @ 100yards.....Switched to 225 Hornady Interlocks and the groups tightened up to about 1 1/2"@100yards

I was thinking I should use the 340...that way if I come across a wholly mammoth I'd be able to knock it down....I'm pretty sure all the elephents are hibernating now...

BTW.....I don't run out of ammo when I'm hunting...

Maybe I'll just take them both:D

Russ, why do you shoot 225gr bullets when your max range will be no more than 300 yards? Why not a 250 or 275?

I don't know why I use the 225gr. bullet.....Guess I'm a Light bullet for Cal. kinda guy:) I don't have time to start making another load.....Leaving on the 26th of this month...

Load the 340 with 250gr partition and enough RL19 to get it just over 2900FPS and go elk hunting. The 300 would be fine-- but if you have a 340 mind as well use. It's pretty hard to beat a well loaded 340wby for any game,it truly is a great caliber

Riding mountain area....Runs to the end of January....

I'm leaning towards the 340....But I don't want to hurt my 300's feelings..

And you guys are as undecided as I am.....Poll's at 50/50
