Winchester made some 200gr Silver Tip bullets, and 250gr Silver Tip bullets for the 348 Winchester. My preference is for the 200gr if I can find them. Are there any floating around out there?

I use the 200 grain Hornady .348 bullets in my Winchester Model 71.As far as I know Hornady still manufactures these bullets.

I do have a supply of the Hornady 200gr FP Interlocks and I plan to crank some of them out with IMR 4350 today. I was just trying to see if there were any of the old Winchester 200gr Silver Tips 'floating' around. Just something different to 'try' but the Hornady's will probably be the main ones I use. The guy I get my cast bullets from has a couple for that calibre so there's something else again that I'll 'play' with.

Johnn, Those old Silvertip bullets look so neat and so represent the time period, that I don't blame you for wanting some.
I would think some factory loaded Silvertips would be the icing on the cake.

True enough. A box or two of factory Winchester Silver Tips would set it off nicely.:) I'll have to keep my eyes peeled at gunshows, for those 'goodies' and I'm also looking for a set of original, if possible, sling attachments/swivels for the model 71. I have to try and get to the Kamloops show one of these days. Now, some lunch and then reload my first few boxes of shells for my new baby.;)

Try Wholesale Sports. That is where I picked up a pile of them for my model 71.
I see the Winchester brass listed in the WSS catalog but the only 348 bullets I see listed are the 200gr Hornady. Mind you, my catalog is the 2005-2006 edition. Do you have a newer catalog & if so, are the 200gr Winchester Silver Tip bullets listed????
While out Edmonton way for my Mule Deer draw hunt I picked up some of the Winchester brass and Hornady bullets @ P&d. As of yet, I haven't found any Winchester 200gr Silver Tip bullets, yet but I have my fingers crossed some will 'turn up'.

Seems to me that Barnes use to make .348 bullets.Think they were 250 grain.

I have a fair number of old factory loaded Winchester .348 ammunition with the Silver Tip bullets.Cannot say that I have ever seen the Winchester Silver Tip bullets for sale.

If I was to guess I would think that they were available in times gone by but as the .348 became less popular they stopped making the Silver Tips available to the public.I would assume that the limited runs of .348 Silver Tips of late yers were used in the factory Winchester loads .

Yes, you're probably quite right concerning the Silver Tips. I've used the Hornady bullets in the 1st model 71 and they're more than adequate. It's just that it would be nice to get hold of some Silver Tips, for a bit of variety to 'play' with. It'll give me something to search for at gun shows.

And thanks again guys for the info.

The Barnes Original 250 gr. work well in my '71 although recoil is a bit more
"significant" than the 200 gr. Hornady.
Hawk bullets from New Jersey also make 348 in 2 or 3 different weights and they shoot well.
My brother in the Yukon buys Kodiak bullets from Alaska for his 348 and likes them but I've not tried them.
Regarding the Silvertip bullets / loads, I think a lot of '71 owners would like to find some, I've got a few squirreled away somewhere...

Did not Winchester at one time make a 150 grain bullet for the.348?Seems to me I remember reading about then.

Have not shot my old Winchester Model 71 .348 for quite sometime. It was always a joy to shoot.I always shot very well with it.:)

I have an interesting proposal from the Bullet Barn about getting a mould to make 200 grain hardcast, If your interested p.m. me with your e-mail and I will forward her e-mail to you.

I believe you're correct. In his book/manual 'Pet Loads', Ken Waters makes mention of a 150gr bullet that apparently was somewhat unpopular. Also, in the Barnes # 3 manual I have, in the .348 Winchester section it is stated "Factory .348 WCF ammunition was offered with 150-, 200- and 250-grain bullets".
There, in addition to Hornady, may be a possible source of supply, Barnes bullets. The Barnes manual lists four, a 200gr XFN, 220gr XFN, 220gr original and a 250gr original. I say 'may be' is because a quick check in a few retail outlets like WSS, I don't see them listed. Again, the 200gr FP Interlock by Hornady will be adequate and keep me busy , for the time being anyway.
And in answer to the post by bunny, there is a good source of supply locally for cast bullets. While I do like reloading and I used to do all my own casting, it was never a part of reloading I 'enjoyed'. As such, with the guy locally, he supplies all my cast requirements. Quality, price, calibers, variety and availability makes it hardly worth my while doing.:D

Kevan: Curious why you reject NEI moulds? There has been a thread on another forum panning them but my experience with them has been fine including a 270 grain 348 mould I obtained about 2 years ago from them.
It is better made than any of my RCBS moulds and I have quite a bunch of them including the 200 grain 348 which only casts 200 grain from linotype. Heavier from commonly used alloys by about 10-15 grains.
