I started toying with the idea of playing with a Savage last year and to see if it was as easy to change barrels as everybody was saying. I had a look at Mystic's web page and see what was available in pre-chambered barrels. If I was going to re-barrel a Savage it was going to be something interesting! I went down the list and saw the .35 Rem. A .35 Rem in a modern bolt action would be pretty different.

So I ordered a 19" barrel. Snagged a Savage on the EE (pretty cool little carbine in itself: short action, accutrigger, centerfeed DBM, thin 20" barrel in .308 Win). The only issue is that I had to have a custom made bolt head to accommodate the .35 Rem non-standard bolt head.

A few days ago I finally got around to get all the pieces together. Feeds perfectly form the DBM. Should be a cool little rifle to play with.

Very interesting thread and pictures, Thanks for sharing.
I have only had two... an early Marlin and currently an old but very fine Rem. Mod. 8, often wondered what it would be like in a bolt action.
When I was a kid back on the farm a neighbor who was an avid hunter used an ancient Rem. pump in 35 to take Moose, both Deer species, Pronghorn Antelope, and Mountain goat.

A short barrel black rifle in a synthetic stock, detachable magazine, picatinny rail, 1-4 scope. One could almost call it "Tactical"! In a 108 year old cartridge.:D

Strange that the bolt would have to be altered, because I reload for the 35 Remington and they use the standard Mauser, 30-06, 308, etc, shell holder.
Also, I wonder if Savage has always kept the same threads, etc. In other words, could a new barrel be put on the old Savage 340 Models?
It was good seeing you at Kamloops.

The .35 Rem has a .460 rim diameter contrary to the "standard" .473. Remington apparently used the same bolt head in their bolt action rifles and pistols chambered in .35 Rem without too much issue. I tried .35 Rem ammo in my Savage when it was still a .308 Win and the extractor would not reliably catch the rim of the cartridge. Maybe Savage heads are little more sloppy (or at least mine was) compared to Remington?

I considered such a project on a Model Seven as it would be just about perfect for deer hunting here in the East, but alas I went with the 358Win on a 7oo instead.

That 35Rem would have been much cooler.

The 35 Remington is sloppy in a 308 shell holder.
I tried to get a shell holder for the 35, but they give the same number as the standard Mauser case. I never bothered looking up the dimensions of the 35 case.

Great idea and awesome final product!

I have to ask: why is the last round in the picture leaning to the right?

Hey, Awesome!

I like, keep this thread updated if you will, interesting to see some figures and report on accuracy an thump on a critter!

Without the goodies above the receiver, what do you have invested here?
Or what would it cost one to do such an endeavor?

First look at my sig line where I quoted SuperCub.:D

- $300-$400: Savage (a Steven would work as well) donor rifle. Not sure if the older staggered mag would work as well so I used a center feed model
- $400: Shilen pre-chambered barrel
- $100: Custom bolt head (stupid .35 Rem non standard head size)
- $100: Go and No Go gauge

Other thing you'll need that you may already have or can re-use is of course a barrel vise and a Savage nut wrench.
