35 Rem Marlin Marauder proves it's a capable hunting arm

This week I harvested a 275lb black bear boar (pic below) with my 35Rem Marlin Marauder (16" barrel).

My handloads using Remington 200gr RN_CLs at a chronographed 2100MV pulled permanently the rug out from under this healthy specimen. The bear ran all of five feet after being hit. Most all my rifles - including a few considered classic collectables like this one - get some time to hunt in the woods. The Marauder sure was a natural up in my close quarter platform tree stand.

I love 35s for bear hunting and usually choose a more powerful one from my safe - like 35 Whelen or 350RemMag with 250s at 2440MV or even a 356 or 358 with 250s. The tree cam had indicated larger bears around - in the 500lb class - so I wondered about the wisdom of taking my potentially less capable 35Rem trapper. But I figured a hundred years worth of Maine guides couldn't be wrong on liking the 35Rem for bears. It proved to have enough snuff to work well on the bear that showed up - so I'm very pleased. However IMO the 35Rem doesn't walk the woods with much excess power - but enough is all I really need.

I sure like this handy little 35cal lever gun - every woods hunter should have one :p

Nice markings on that bear for sure, nice looking little rifle as well.

It seems heavy and not too fast is good yogi medicine.
 
Very nice bear. I "harvested" simmilar one in May this year with my 63' JC Higgins mod 45 (336 Marlin) in 35Rem with 220gr Speer FP bullet. That bear just colapsed on the spot at 70yds or so from my much harder hitting handload ( 20" barrel casefull of AA2520 @ 2150 fps)

That guy is just some sad old passing redneck I asked to hold up my rifle and bear while I snapped a photo.

My fave all around carry rifle is very much the same as yours, only in .44 mag running full-throttle hardcast handloads.
Hang on to that Marauder, it's only going up in value!
 
Follow up
- I found this under the offside hide when I skinned the bear last week - it angled thru the the chest but didn't exit.

It's a Rem 200 SP_corelokt which now weighs 165grs. The bullet is intact and that's 82.5% retained weight which is pretty good. The bullet shank suggests the "Micro groove" rifling is certainly doing its job. These seem to be working together very well and designed properly for such modest velocity as the 35Rem can deliver.

While i don't have pics, i can tell you that i've seen more than a few moose taken over the years with a .35 Remington. Great cartridge and Nice bear!

Yep, and it delivers even better with the 220 Speer flat nose! :)
