So this is a project I have had in my mind for the last few years. I was thinking of the Savage action as I can get all the parts and peices and assemble it myself. The purpose of this rifle will be a light carry rifle for bush hunting with shots being as far as 50 - 75 yards with long shots being 100 yards.

Savage/Stevens short action.
Shilen Sporter barrel cut down to 16.5 inches no longer then 18 inches.
Bell and Carlson stock
Bushnell 4X Wide View scope

I think this would make a nice light all day bush gun. Loaded up with some Remington 200gr Core-Lokt or some Hornady 200gr Interlock round nose bullets would make for a hard hitting Moose, Elk, Black Bear and Deer gun.

35 remington has either a rim or a semi rim(can't remeber which) so it might be problematic feeding from a mag. I have never built one so don't quote me there. My choice would be the 358 winchester. No rim to deal with, a bit better performance, and brass can be made from 308 brass if you can't find any. Just a thought.

That's almost exactly what I want except I'm going 358 Winchester or possibly 338 federal

Cva makes a single in that caliber as well. It would make a real nice light gun

A 358Win would be your best chamber for this project. Brass is as easy as resizing 308 and it offers a lot more than 35Rem for the larger game you mention. If it was deer only, the 35Rem would be the way to go.

Also would not go shorter than 20" for bbl length. Handling suffers and barrels as short as you mention look goofy in a stock with a +10" forend. Forend should be less than 1/2 the length of the visible bbl length to look right.

35 rem is a great cartridge, don't let the paper ballistics fool you ,I've had many stag caribou and big moose drop to my handloads in an old Marlin ...biggest moose was 58 inch ,all one shot with 180 grain speer
