35 Whelen/9.3x62 Nolser

I came across Nolser Custom Ammo for these two rounds and something seems strange to me.

35 Whelen 225gr 2800fps
35 Whelen 250gr 2520fps

9.3x62 250gr 2520fps
9.3x62 286gr 2450fps

Shouldn't the 9.3 drive the 250gr faster? I knew these rounds were in the same class but I didn't realize they were this close.
 
Goin off ADI's guide, the 250gr are in the same class -/+ 50fps...
the Whelen does it with 5grains less powder.. while the 9.3 is a compressed load.
 
The 9.3x62 has a larger case capacity and larger bore, and should be about 100 fps faster than the 35 Whelen for a given bullet weight at the same pressure.

The answer is not that easy, there are thousands upon thousands of mod 1898 old, old and much used Mausers in 9,3-62 cal in Africa. Ammo for those must be downloaded b/c suspect action strenght and high temperatures leading to spikes in presure....Bore is larger....well whole 0,007" and brass has 3 more grains capacity than Whelen. If this argument is not about hair splitting I don't know what is. Is 280 Rem better than 270 Win? With the best scenario the 9,3/62 might be 50 fps faster than Whelen with 250gr bullet any other conclusion is just pipe dreaming.

The Mauser 96 action certainly doesn't have the gas handling capabilities that the Mauser 98 has. I suspect that Nosler has run the loads a bit light because of the chance of being used in old actions. Still potent nonetheless.
 
The 225 Nosler .35whelen is obviously loaded Hot, for 2,800fps.. the adi guide has the fastest 225gr at 2600, with the 180gr pills the only ones touchin on 2800fps.(24inch tube)

But otherwise id say your splitting hairs.
while were on the subject, Im loading 2208 behind Woodleigh 225Gr pills, start load reaches 51gr for 2440fps an a max of 56gr for 2590fps, where would you guys be happy with the load, just whenever accuracy is around an inch at 100? or would you want max pace from the whelen? (deer hunting outfit)
 
I was more surprised then anything. I already own a 35 Whelen and I have a 9.3x62 on the way. I have read articles about what it will do to African game and they even compared it to the 375 HH so I thought the difference between it and the 35 Whelen would be greater. So now I have two guns that will do the same thing. Well I guess I'm not the only one around here to do that.

Whelenlad. I tend to drive the bullets as fast as is safe in an attempt to shoot as flat as possible. How long are your shots going to be?

Oh well, time to sell one an find another Calibre that tickles your fancy!!

Im hunting high country an i havnt taken a shot over 100m yet, but sometimes the across gulley shot will arrise so id say it'll all be under 250m..
Which is the reason i piurchased the 35Whelen, i also have a 270 incase im shootin longer ranges an not just stalking.

I only have 50 Woodleighs, an a small container of powder, an i dont really want to waste woodleighs on paper.$$

I wouldn't doubt Whelen copied the 9.3x62 when he developed the 35 Whelen using more available .358 bullets................both good proven cartridges just be done before.....Harold
 
Most of those using the 9.3X62 on large african games (it means a lot of local ranchers) use 285/286 grains bullets at minimum, 300 and bigger are not rare (Ah! Woodleigh!). That's were the 9.3 have the edge over the 35 Whelen. The 285/286 grains bullets provides heavy penetration wich will produce "close to" 300 grains 375 H&H performances.
In the rifles I have chambered for the 9.3X62, I personally use 270 and 285/286 grains on moose and 250 grains on bears (they hate Accubond bullets!), they're deadly. I wouldn't hesitate using any of those bullets on deer, too. It will just bang-pierce-drop the beast.
Heavy bullets over 250 grains are hard to find in 35 caliber.

From what we can gather on the period, I too, would say Whelen was greatly "inspired" by the Otto Bock creation.
