35 Whelen Boom Sticks, what do you have?

Mine’s a 7600 from the first year if production which if I remember right was 1988. It was my engagement rifle from
my late wife of 30 years. Still got the gun though, even if I don’t use it much anymore.

Mines a Ruger Hawkeye model .... Not a bad rig but a bit heavy these days..

I've taken Buffalo with it here in Aus.
Use it for large boned and bodied deer. (sambar) an think the 250gr is where it's at. Mildly loaded too mind you it does thump deer respectfully at moderate ranges

I started with a Rem 700 BDL that I restocked in the classic style. Shot a dozen or so elk, a few moose, and some deer and a caribou with it. Worked perfectly, always did the job. Mostly used 250 grain bullets at 2500 fps, a very deadly and versatile combination. Of course I sold it. Owned a Ruger #1 with a custom 24" barrel and liked it a lot, but it was an unlucky rifle and sold it too. Now I have a Sako AV Classic rebarreled with a custom 1-12" twist 24" barrel. Love it. That one's a forever rifle.
If doing it over today, I'd just buy a nice European rifle in 9.3x62 and be done with the experimenting. On the other hand, I have two 9.3x62's, and like them a lot, might need another some time....

I had one in a 700 "Classic" for the better part of a decade, then sold it.
I shot 2 moose with it and a fair muley buck. One shot each, all done but
the hard work. :) Dave.

My first was a Remington CDL that I dropped into an H-S Precision stock. Parted ways with it and always kicked myself for selling it but I started building a custom in my head.

My perfect rifle has been through two seasons now. Light package that is easy to carry, shoulders very comfortably, and mild recoil. I have only used Remington Corelokt, 200 grain loads for hunting but five shots will cloverleaf into one ragged hole at 100 metres. The 250 grain stay tight out to 300 but start to spread after that and drop very quickly. I have reached out to 400 metres using the reticle and am very pleased with the end results. I do not have a PhotoBucket to be able to post pics.
- Rem700 stainless action, trued
- KS Arms barrel, 22", 12" twist, #2 taper, target crown
- Timney Elite Hunter trigger
- McMillan Edge
- Swarovski Z3, 3-10X42 BRH in Talley, one piece mounts
- Harris 6-9" bipod
- Quake Claw sling

I started with a 35 Whelen Remington 700 with a tan spider web hs precision stock. Pretty sure I purchased it from you Duncan. Quite a few years ago now. Shot my first mountain goat with it at 369 yards using the factory 200gr superformance ammo.
My second Whelen was a cooper that shot great and I beleive I just seen it up for sale again.
My third and final Whelen is a kimber Montana chambered with a #3 benchmark. The gun is pretty light but it sure shoots 225gamekings at 2800fps into the same hole using TAC.

None of my rifles ever shot the 225accubonds well. I really wish they did. Anyone have any luck finding accuracy with accubonds in this cartridge

I only shoot 250 grain Partitions and Hot-Cors in my Whelens, but the 225 AB's are very accurate out of my .358-375 Ruger... I have always found that they get better at higher speeds, regardless of the bore... I shoot AB's in 6.5mm, 7mm, .30 cal and .35 cal.

My Hawkeye stainless Whelen is MOA with 225 accubonds and a max charge of Varget. I've taken 3 elk, a moose and a few deer. It hits with a smack you just don't get with the smaller calibers.

Thanks guys. I’ll have to try to work up the 225 accubonds with TaC. I havnt tried that combo yet. With the speed I get with tac hopefully those accubonds shoot. Although the boring vanilla 225gameking is a hammer on game.

Mine is a custom Ruger MKII with a Bevan King barrel put together by our own Rembo. One of the most accurate rifle I have with. Shot moose with it a few years ago then took the back seat when I got my .375 Ruger. I had it out last moose season and probably next year.

Yours is one of two Rugers I barreled to a Whelen. The other is this left hand Mark II I did for my son. Also a King barrel at 22-1/2"
The Model 70 is one I had Bill Leeper do for me in 2012 on a 1949 action with a Shilen at 23" in a McMillan. A friend of my son now owns it and I get to see it in elk camp. Try as I might I cannot buy it back...LOL

First 1 was built about 30 years ago on a Chech 98 mauser action. Second one is a rebuilt M1-Garand I picked up on here last summer

I've got a M700 CDL stainless, one of the limited runs, they did ten years or so back, shoots well, nice little compact Leopold 2x7 for a scope, think of selling it as moving likely overseas, and need to down size, I will be a bit sad to see it go, not fussy,
But with a .358 win at my moving location and a 9.3 double rifle coming with me it wont be need,
Nice cal, but I actually prefer the .358 win over the Whelen.

Could you please elaborate on your preference of 358Win>35 Whelan? Reason, I have a 358Win (Savage99 Brush Gun) and always like a reason not to covet a 35 Whelan rifle.

If your shooting is 200 and in, or say, "not beyond 250... the .358 Win will do everything the Whelen will do, where it counts. The only time I pull the Whelen over the .358 Win is if I suspect that there might be shooting beyond 250... I shoot the Whelen regularly out to 350, and am very confident in placing a bullet accurately to that distance, but that is pretty much the hard cut-off line for shooting at game with my current load.
