Good day to all,

A new Ruger Hawkeye 35 Whelen has recently come into my posession and I was wondereing what you fellas thought would be a good moose bullet. I have 220 Speer FN, 225 Sierra SBT, 250 Hornady RN and Sp's. Also 180 Speer FN, although I don't really think that would be a consideration.

I've read a number of places that the Sierra is not the best choice, although the naysayers usually seem to be referring to have shot through a whitetail and not really large animals like elk or moose.

Also, I'm not really convinced that a Nosler or Barnes is really a necessity in a rifle like this at the speeds they can moved out at.

Any and all opinions/ advice would be most welcome.

Speer or Hornady 250 sp's, 225 nosler Partition on elk and moose, 250 grain rcbs cast byllet on mule deer. Load whatever powder your rifle likes and try for around 2450-2500fps for velocity on the 250's.

You can't go wrong.
 
I'd try Charlie's recomendation...my son's 22-1/2" King barreled left hand Ruger Whelen does a solid 2700 with 225 Accubonds over 59 grs of Rel15. Shoots under an inch too. It'll work.
 
The ordinary 250 grain Hornady round nose work great in both my Rem. 7600 and my custom Mauser. Where I hunt, the moose are generally within 100 yards, so a high BC is not required. Accurate and deadly---what more can you ask?
 
Gratz on the Whelen, I absolutely love mine. I have a 700 BDL Custom Deluxe from about '90 or '91 and it shoots like a house on fire with plain jane 200gr Cor-Lokts and do wonders on the deer and moose I've taken. (It was floated and bedded, and very well too)
I just started with 225gr TSX over 56gr of IMR 4064 at around 2500fps, but haven't had the chance to use them on an animal yet. They produce one big hole at 100m.
I've also decided to try the 225gr Partitions with R15, I'm glad someone else has had good luck with it.

The fellow I bought the rifle off of would be best to talk to since this sort of thing is his main hobby (he's a very bad influence on me) and he still shoots his other Whelen (LH700). He's always said that almost any 225gr pill out of his or his friends 700s have shot great. He also liked the 250 Hornadys as they hit like a ton of bricks, but become indirect fire past 300 yards. Think 5' of hold over for 500 yards.

My experience as well. ;)
Remington brass, Federal GM primers and RL15 powder.
4 moose, 4 shots. None travelled more than 15 yards.
Nothing more to ask for.
 
Lead bullets in meat has killed many diners since the 1800s, however i would use the heaviest bullet that shows the best accuracy.

The best shooting cast bullet in my old Whelen is the Lyman 3589 at about 285 gr. or so...... and we didn't get lead poisoning from the Saskatchewan Moose that it put in the freezer.
When I was forced to resort to jacketed bullets, the 250 Hornady RN did the job.
