I am new to reloading and looking for info on best bullets and related info for my 35 whelen. The reloads will be mostly for elk and moose hunting and mostly within the 300 yard range.
I've found the combination of RL15 and Hornady 250grain RN bullets to be the most accurate in my rifles. However, RL15 may as well be unobtainium right now.
If it's for a Remington 700, IMR 4064 and anything 225 grain or for a thumper, try H4895 and 250 Hornadys. Federal 210 primers for both. They work in every Whelen/700 that I know of. Published loads, safe and sound, keeps your blood on the inside. Work up slowly to max over a chrony. Eat elk and moose.
Yes - I was especially intigued by the MV's reported with the use of H4895 with the 250's. I've stuck by RL-15 (and recently RL-17), but plan to try it.
A very good friend of mine worked with a Whelen extensively many years ago and settled on the 250 Speer spritzer using IMR 4320. This gave him consistently the highest velocity and excellent accuracy. So not wishing to reinvent the wheel I started with IMR 4320 and the 250 Nosler Part, my rifle has a long throat so seating bullets close to the lands gives maximum powder capacity for this cartridge.
This particular photo gives a powder charge that I DO NOT recommend to anyone, who has not diligently worked up to from a considerably lower charge. This load is safe in my rifle, with it's long throat, but is significantly higher than any manual will recommend. These loads were worked up in a Rem 700 Classic.
I've been reloading for the 35 Whelen for my "Menonite Machine Gun" (Remington 7600 rifle) for over yea 20 years now.
Sorry I didn't pick-up a 700 CDL when they were available.
I like RL-15 and the 250 Hornady RN a lot ... but keep it down to about 58gr. for moose. Under an inch consistently at 100 yds.
It has been very effective !!!
Also played around a bit with 200 gr. Sierra RN's and 220 gr. Speer FP's for deer and black bear with H-335 and IMR 4895, keeping
the loads at around "starting" levels ... about consistent with good loads for the 358 Winchester. ( which is also a great deer cartridge )
Would also like to try & develop some Whelen loads with Varget, BL-C(2) and the new IMR 8208 XBR
Doug's ("c-fbmi" ) loads are pretty impressive, but a lot more than I'd trust in a 7600 ! ( They're actually more like 250 gr. 338 Win Mag/358 Norma Mag loads ! )
Some of "Whelen B's" ( Northwoods 35 cal.) are a little stout for me as well. I have met and talked with Whelen a number of times and he
proceeds cautiously enough ... but his results, mine and yours may vary !
