35 Whelen on deer

My point was even when using a caliber much smaller[60%] than a 35 whelen whether or not you had a tracking job was far dependant on where you put your shot than what caliber you were using.I do also have a 9,3x57[.366] loaded with 286 gr privipartizans -pretty close to the 35 whelen, but that is reserved for moose.Even a 22 long rifle[ illegal though it be]will drop a deer in its tracks if you hit it right behind the eye.I had a friend who shot feral goats with a 22 with great success-but he limited himself to 40 yard standing, head shots.

Look up "Whelen B's" posts ... he's a big 35 fan too. ! Surprised he hasn't chimed in yet.
Just in lurk mode enjoying the 35cal banter. The 35 Whelen is where my 35cal disease got its start over two decades ago now. Sures kills em dead in my experience.
Shot placement is what governs how far an animal goes after the shot not the bullet that hits it.
ahh - it's kinda both as we all know - what you hit em with can make a huge difference - and a few other factors in my experience too like adrenaline, down hill terrain etc. The 35 whelen usually makes big game lie down pretty fast though - if loaded and pointed right (shot placement).
My .35 Whelen hammered deer when I still used it. It's in different league than the .308s and '06s.
I think so too.

I'm looking forward to seeing how 286 grs of soft lead moving at a modest 2000fps from my 9,3x57 handles Vancouver Island black bear this spring[season opens in just a few weeks now]I suspect it will hit like the hammer of Thor....

Your absolutely right that bullet placement is more important then caliber.

my uncle uses a 35 whelen with 200 grain remington psp's and if you hit them in the neck it makes one god awful hole if you hit them anywhere it knocks them down
