Way back when, I used my roommates Rem 7600 in 35 Whelen to take a cow elk; worked just fine with the 200 gr Corelokt.
Later, when I was building a new lh custom rifle on a Rem 700 action, I thought about the 35 Whelen, but went with the 338-06 instead, as I had friends with Whelens, but knew no one with a 338-06 and Weatherby had just started making ammo for it. Also I had just sold my 338 Win Mag because I was having shoulder issues, and the 338-06 would replace that rifle with good performance and less recoil for a sensitive shoulder. It shoots the 215gr SGK at 2750 fps. It has worked well on game and is very accurate.
I just picked up a lh Sako L691 carbine in 30-06. As good as the 30-06 is, I am just not a fan. Been thinking of rebarreling to a larger caliber. First thoughts are 9.3x62, but I have a lh Sako 85 Hunter on order and should be here soon, so don't need two...so 35 Whelen has also been thought about. A 20" Whelen would give me a jump up from my BLR in 358 Win, and would be a handy brush gun for moose, elk and bears.
I know a lot of guys that just love their Whelens and their experience with those rifles on big game has been excellent.
My mentor has rifles in 358 Win, 35 Whelen and 358 Norma; of the 3 he has carried his Whelen most often.

35 Whelen is good choice. 376 Steyr maybe? Would have to check with a gunsmith to see if there is enough "meat" on the bolt face. COL shouldn't be a problem. I'm sure there's more to it than that though.

Nice to know that there is someone else out there that enjoys the 376 Steyr!
I have a custom lh Ruger Model 77 chambered to the 376 Steyr, with a pepper laminated mannlicher stock from Wenig. It is a pussycat off of the bench with its favourite load; 260gr AccuBond at 2632fps out of the 21" King barrel. Oh, and it shoots 1/2" groups!
I have taken elk and bison with it to date.
