35 whelen owners

You can hunt anything in North America you want to with a 35 Whelan or its better for reloading kissing cousin the 338-06.

Not a lot of stores carry ammo though so reloading will be your best option.

If you don't reload, the 35 Whelan is more available than the almost non existent 338-06

Check my thread in the Hunting section "having a crack at buffalo soon" , I use my Whelen mostly on Sambar deer (elk sized) with 225gr Woodleigh RN, I recently took it up into NT an shot Buffalo and pigs with it...

IMO I use mine as a close range Stalking rifle an try not to shoot past 200m with it, that's due to RN trajectory but if set up properly.... I cant see why 250-300 wouldn't put game down.

Enough good bullets around for them these days including the Monos but with .358 inches & 250gr of Jacketed Lead, who needs a Mono :)

Yes, since 1988. Well bonded to it. (Also have a 25-06 to keep things simple)

Deer & moose, black bear occasionally. Ontario bush ... shooting usually less than 75 yards, sometimes much less.
Very few opportunities for shots at 150 yards or more.

Deer & bear with 200 gr. Sierra RN's or 220 Speer FP's, moose with 250 gr. Hornady RN's. RL-15 and am considering
working up loads with W748 & IMR-4320 because of RL-15 scarcity. Have also used H-335. May also try BL-C(2)
and H-4895 with Barnes 225's.

Really like the whelen. Found a store with 6 boxes of 200 gr rem core loks (bought them all). Hopeing to start reloading this winter. Been using the whelen for deer, elk, and moose with great success.

My 35 Whelen is launched with an awesome Ruger number 1. I've getting deer with my 308 win bolt but I will exclusively use my 35 Whelen for all my big game hunting starting this autumn. I'm going old school with a single shot and iron sights. I've been practicing a lot this year with shooting through the peeps out to 200. That will be the maximum I will take game with irons at a fairly bright day but with low light conditions of the dusk or dawn, I will probably be relegated to 100 as my max with irons.

I've been practicing with Hornady 250 SP interlock behind 53 grains of H4895 but I wil be using my lead-free Barnes for the deer. I am standardizing it with 225 TSX pushed to 2700+ fps for all my big game work. I'll probably use Varget as the powder.
