35 whelen trajectory

hey guys, similar to the other day with the 270, today I blasted some rounds out of the hawkeye, 35 whelen.

with the 2-7x33 leupold vx2 and 225gr RN woodleighs & 55gr "Varget" I achieved

roughly +2 @ 100m
roughly -6 @ 200m


Fairly much Rainbow trajectory in comparision to the .270win.


Doesnt seem right but I suppose it comes down to Velocity, which is guesstimated at touch under 2600fps...

Up to about 200 yds, the trajectory is all about velocity - bullet shape and weight factor in as well more at longer distances.
 
Id say the estimation is off, that's goin off ADIs figures from a 24 inch bbl, Im using a 22 inch barrel an after playing on strelok with velocitys, to look something similar the round is doing 2400fps +1.6/100m -5/200m about a 150m zero......

Not exactly what I was hoping for.
 
Im not convinced about that,
Tomorrow im goin to shoot 1 shot an go check the target, rather than shooting 2 at each distance, (I was skimping on ammo) but #### it, It could be a few things which is giving the result.

I think you're ready for a chrony - they're not expensive.

You should be able to drive a 225 gr bullet to 2700 fps - others regularly achieve 2500-2600 fps with a 250 gr bullet (e.g. myself with 60.0 grs of Re15 and 66.0 grs of Re17 at a COAL of 3.400", which is still 0.120" from the rifling - LONG throat). This is in defiance of many published loads, which tend to use very short COAL's and low max pressures (e.g. 46-50K CUP), whereas you can go as high as 52K CUP and remain at or under SAAMI max for the 35 Whelen.

What is your COAL with the 225 gr Woodleigh?

This is from my 700 Classic 35 Whelen with a 22" barrel, and the primers are still tight after 4 loads in R-P brass. It is a very capable cartridge out to 300 mtrs when loaded with 225 gn spritzer bullets at 2800 fps. Even at 2800 fps with 225s you are nowhere near the "danger zone" I have driven them to over 2900 without brass loss or issue what so ever. My 20" 350 RM produces 2900+ fps with 225 AB in my Mod 7 KS and I've loaded some of those cases 5+ times now and haven't lost a single case, and they are all R-P cases as well, not even W-W (not available of course in 350) which are always good for another 75-100 fps.
Check out the velocity consistency with this load, the extreme spread through the second screens (these are the more accurate set, further from the muzzle blast) is only 14 fps !!!

i would try a 3" high zero at 100 yards with load listed. Should be zero at 200y and around 4"high at 150y. I load 250g in mine and zero as listed and don't have an issue hitting animals with it.

pick a better BC'd bullet, get it up to near max velocity, and remember, a Whelen is NOT a varmint round... but a moose makes a big target way out there, and you can set up for a decent trajectory.
 
That looks like a good trajectory to me for moose and elk hunting. I killed a lot of elk and a few moose with my Whelen using 250's at 2500, a perfectly capable combination. Those RN Woodleighs are well made bullets, they won't run with a .270 for trajectory no matter what, but they don't have to to get the job done inside a moose or other big critter!

but a Sambar Deer is very close to an Elk, We say they are a horse with antlers. or the aussie moose.. So it relates ;)

I havnt had a problem using this sight in height, an did pepper a stag at 300M, luck was on my side that day but lets not talk about the 6 rounds used an then the stalk in... (I was young ok) haha

Now days its a pretty Strict stalking Rifle, an would rarely get shot over 200m, So im going to leave the Sight in height.

This was the first gun I reloaded for, an maybe my inexperience shows in the loads, I'm going to do a little more shooting today as I have 18 more Woodleighs to reload, and 30 loaded rounds. Which is plenty for Winter.

The BC on these are like .263

I'l report back tonight , making sure my figures are accurate, I arnt Benchrest shooter, I lay prone on a Swag but need to stiffen my front rest.

3.205 abouts. Depending on weather the RN SP is flat or not. :S

Im experiencing some flattened primers and also what appears to be 'poppin' the primers out a little.


So I think these rounds arnt Target material, but certainly Critter material!

After measuring all the cartridges left in one pack, I found the COAL varies from about 3.200-3.210 That itself would effect Accuracy & also give different Pressures in regards to some Flattened nicely primers and some popped up primers!

What you have described are signs of low, not high pressure.

A 10 thou variation in COAL is not likely going to affect accuracy.
