35 Whelen

Do you have a preferred bullet weight? Bullet type? What purpose are these loads for? Are you looking for powder recommendations? Case recommendations? Primer recommendations? Die recommendations? What distances are you shooting at?
Your question is so open it's difficult to answer. Someone could share a pet load that uses components you can't find and doesn't shoot well in your rifle.

I will be using the Whelen for moose 200 yard shot max thinking 225 gr possibly using resized 30-06 cases if 35 whelen brass not readily available

Thanks Dave

What kind of help? Epp's lists brass. Have a look at Shooter's Choice in Waterloo too.
Making Whelen out of .30-06 is just necking up 50 thou. Hornady makes .35 Whelen dies with a tapered expander. Lube the inside of the necks well.

Speaking of necking up, I am using once fired Federal and Winchester brass. 54 grs of RL15 left me with high primers in the neighbourhood of 0.004. I'm using a Hawkeye.
This was with 250 Hornady RNs 3.30" oal. I haven't tried neck sizing only or anything yet of this brass after shooting it, just shooting it and loading more. Hornady manual says 55.1 max. Also, I have used Nosler Custom brass. VERY pricey!!! $104.99 for 50 I think. I'll follow this with interest to see what others are doing.

250 grain bullets are the best in the Whelen for big critters in my experience. I have had very good results on many elk and a couple moose with a variety of 250 gr bullets, they all work well. Four 225's I have used were: one Nosler Ballistic tip shot in a bull elk that failed to penetrate enough from a rear angle and the elk was lost. (I have hit a couple of elk with that same shot placement and 250 speer grand slams and the result was a dead elk quickly). Another 225 experience was a Sierra Boat tail. It failed to open at all on a whitetail that was shot perfectly through the chest at about 10 yards. Deer ran about 150 yards before dying. Tiny little hole through the lungs. The old Federal Premium factory load of 225 TBBC was good on the two elk shot with it. An old original 225 gr. barnes X bullet worked perfectly too. I would advise using only premium bullets if you plan to shoot 225's in the Whelen for moose. I have shot about a dozen elk and moose with cheap 250 Speer and Hornady bullets with excellent penetration and perfect mushrooms each time. They were also accurate in a Rem 700.
My rifles have liked IMR 4064 and RL 15 for 250's.

I am finally getting ready to do some testing with the Whelen I have had for almost a year. Any opinions on Varget and 250's? Just curious as that's what I will be starting with.
