35 Whelen

So I've been really thinking on putting together a rifle based just off a Remington 700 action. Was thinking a .270wsm, 35 whelen or a 25-06. The more I read on each the more I read on each the more I seem to like the idea of the 35 whelen. I am not into reloading yet but will be starting soon. Is it worth getting a 35 whelen where ammo is a bit harder to find.? Just looking for peoples opinions on the calibre I guess.
 
35 Whelen is a great round..... (If you don't have a 338-06, 350rm, or 9.3x62 :) )

Kidding aside, it's a great round that been around quite awhile. Brass isn't that hard to find or can be made easily.
 
If I didn't already have a 9.3X62, I would get a 35 Whelen......
heck, who am I kidding, I'm still on the hunt for one. Got one off the EE this August that went straight to my father for his birthday. Came on time too!
 
I just had one built on a Win model 70 platform. Ammo wasn't too hard to find, found brass and bullets as well.
Remington Brass, 250gn Speer Hot cores, loaded rounds were Remington 250gn.

Get one if you want, but be warned, you're gonna love it!
It does @ 200y what the 06' does @ 100y and nips at the heals of a 300wm for down range energy.

Super easy calibre to load for, you can load it at 357mag, 35 Remington, 358 win and full house Whelen levels. Brass is easily made from 30-06 with one pass of a die.

Ammo isn't that hard to find, and isn't as expensive as some of the belted mags.

How is the 35 whelen compared to the 270. I have always hunted but have never been into ballistics. I am now starting to become interested and have A LOT to learn.
 
i'll chirp in , as a Whelan user for the past ? 10 years or so.
I only ever shot 2 boxes of factories for Brass an they were 250gr corelokt variety, the drama down under is the price a box, $80/20 .

I began reoading with woodleighs 225gr and had good success on game shooting Deer over a Wirehaired Pointer an seldom were shots over 150m , as I got older I was across gulley shooting.

looking back the 225gr loads were about 1.5 MOA at BEST but I think it had more to do with the Ruger trigger (lc6) , the lack of bedding and the probable lack of free floating barrel (learnt this later).

since then I cracked a Ruger stock and swat it in a dirty ol Ramline stock , an have loaded up Hornady 250gr SP , an this is what I would call the bullet for the Whelen in my situation.
hunting the big deer in thick-ish bush, its awesome!

2400fps est in my min load of Varget out of the 22 inch tube, pass throughs at most ranges , not many go far.

I also used a variety of Woodleighs and Hornadys for Buffalo up In the Northern Terrirtory!


my only gripe is the overall weight of Rugers since I got a lightweight gun...
good for short hunts... or I jus need to man up!

Actually OP, BB is not far off the mark, there is nothing in NA or most of the rest of the planet that one could not cleanly take with a 6.5/06, a 30-06 and a 35 Whelen..............
Mine shoots 250 Parts like a champion..............



My rifle has a fairly long throat, do not use this load without starting 10% lower and working up. I used Win Large Rifle primers and R-P 35 Whelen brass for this load.
 
Go for the whelen!!! You won't regret it. Easy to find components for reloading. Awesome hunting round with more than enough smack to get the job done.

What other rifles do you hunt with?

I see your locale is NS and know that WT deer would be the most hunted big game in your neck of the woods. The Whelen is a fine round and easy to load for, but I would not suggest it as a first rifle for a new shooter. A 243, 25/06 270 etc would be a better place to start.

I could shorten that list down to a 270Win and 35Whelen and still be covered here in NA. :)

Not enough information.

What will be its use? Deer Hunting only? Will this be your first rifle?

It's easy for the 35 Whelen Fanboys to sing its praises, but that doesn't mean it's a good choice for you.
 
I made a trade to get my Whelen & it's a KEEPER!

It's a Nosler M48 Outfitter and I shot a bear with it this spring. I topped it with an Elite 6500 1.25-8x32 in QD Leupold rings.

Taking it for moose soon, going to be using factory loaded Nosler Accubonds, but recently picked up some Nosler Partitions to reload for it.

Have a look at the Nosler, they are a weather proof rifle.
