35 whelen

I have had many 35 whelen's, it is a fantastic cartridge for moose/bear etc.Plenty of stomp with light recoil.Remington makes the CDL in whelen, very nice rifle and with the 24" tube a 250gr @ better than 2600fps is easily done.It works great out to 250yds.
good luck

My dad has owned a few Whelen's. Think they are more suited for bigger big game, a little much for deer imo. Any thought to the 300wsm? The 30-06 is a great cartridge. Not much out there that the '06 can't put down!

the gun i was looking at is a remington model 700 in 35 whelen, blued barrel, gun is in good condition, i know the guy who owns it he always cleaned it after each use and took good care of it, rembo also has one, sounds like a beautiful gun, i bought a 22-250 from him, great guy, i am weighing my options, thanks for the help guys.

If the price is right, go for it. IMHO, you will never regret it. I have one in this combination (I also have a wide range of other calibers) and it has been my main deer bush hunting rifle for the last couple of years using 250 gr commercial ammo.

I've killed a deer with it each year with very little meat damage and immediate kill. Felt recoil is quite moderate and having the upmost confidence in the bullet doing its job correctly is a great confidence builder.

I'm sure that other combination would basically do the same thing but having the confidence needed, is different from shooter to shooter.

For me, if I have a choice between bullet velocity and weight, for large game, my choice is always heavier bullet/larger caliber, within reason.

Good luck with your choice,

Duke1

I've had a Whelen for eight years now and I think it's the best rifle that I own. With a 250 grain Hornady spire point I get 2590fps with a max load of R-15. The thing to consider is that a 250 grain .35 cal and a 180 grain .30 cal have near identical sectional density. Assuming similar bullet design, the ballistic coefficient is also very similar. Now check the velocity that I mention. It's a dead ringer for a .308 firing a 180. Trajectory is essentially the same. Last summer I shot my Whelen a lot at distances and when sighted 2.5" high a 100 I'm approxiamately 10" low at 300. You can get a lot of work done with that trajectory.

Now I think the .308 is a great cartridge, I have one myself, but the Whelen gets .308 trajectory with a 250 grain .358 bullet producing 3700 ft/lbs of muzzle energy and mine at least easily holds 1" groups. Damn I like that rifle!

I can't believe I didn't get my 2 cents in yet on this thread.

Get a 35 Whelen.

Like Berretta Boy says you never meet hunters who use a 35Whelen and not like them - especially good if bear hunting too. You can lengthen point blank range too out to over 300yds for moose by gaining velocity by handloading (as Grit mentioned) and proper sight in (and if necessary dropping bullet weight back to a premium bullet like a 225TSX or 225Accubond). But if you don't handload I would get a 338Win maybe.

Demonical, that 700 Classic in your picture was mine, I bought it new a long time ago when they first came out. I have shot a dozen elk, a couple of moose, and a few deer with it. It was my favourite rifle for a long time, the only reason I sold it was that I had two other Whelens ( Custom Ruger #1 and a custom Sako) and I wanted to do some trading on another new rifle. I'm sure you'll like it.

Pretty cool to hear that LW. I'll try to get around to shooting a bear, moose etc, with it. :)

Longwalker I received the rifle today. It looks good, has the appropriate amount of wear.

I am curious though, I thought the M-700 Classics all had 24" barrels without sights, and this rifle has a 22' Barrel and iron sights. So I wondered if this was a BDL originally that you dropped into a Classic stock?

A 22" barrel with iron sights is exactly what my Remington 700 Classic (.35 Whelen) carries.

I bought mine (new) when the Whelen was "legitimized" by Remington. :)

a 270 Win and a 35Whelen are designed for differant applications, idealy. Both will kill, the 270 design is for light fas bullets and deer sized game. The 35 is for heavy game , elk, moose, bigger bears. Its best with a 250gr bullet, or a 225gr TSX. The 250gr bullet will run 2450-2550 fps, the 225 gr 2700 fps. hand loading really improves this round. my long throated 35W runs 250gr FXBs 2684fps and this is about equal to a 338WM in a lighter shorter package.
