New Zealand is amazing in many way but their firearm, and firearm related bits, fall short in the price department... I'm looking for a factory barrel to replace the rusty sewer pipe on my 110 and I was just offered a factory barrel off another 110 with only 50 rounds through it for only $350!

I've been assured by a few independent sources that this is around the going price for a factory barrel (sweet baby jesus) and the only other option is a $600 aftermarket barrel from True-Flite.

No point to this thread, just needed to share my grief! But now, a picture of why it's worth it (sometimes).

nice view.....

In Canada you can buy the whole Savage rifle for $350.....but that doesn't help you where you are.

There are lots of used factory Savage barrels available here.

Check out your importing regs,...maybe one can be sent to you.

I'm looking into that now as it was well worth it to ship optics down here so if I can get the barrel in I'll still save a bundle even after the shipping costs. I got a hell of a deal on the rifle ($275) as the old guy selling it didn't want to ship it and he lived an hour from anywhere of significance. I'll be damned if I let the price of replacing the barrel kill my budget NZ hunter project - I'm waiting on the funds for a suppressor to help me with that :D

No one ship him anything. Payback for rubbing it in. ;)

The regs on the importation of firearm parts are vague, as per usual... I'll just have to email or call to get the straight answer they should probably have up on their website by now anyways.

Well I e-mailed NZ customs and by the look of things I can import the barrel no problems. Here's what I got in response to restrictions relating to importing the a barrel as a used item for personal use and it seems that as long as the item is second hand and I didn't pay $400 or more for it then they can't charge me the 15%. I'm just going to double check with NZ police to make sure rifle barrels aren't on the list of restricted items.

Thank you for your enquiry.

Firearms and most parts are free of import duty,

All goods are subject to Goods and Services Tax (GST) which is payable upon importation. GST is levied at 15% on the sum of; the price paid or payable, (New or previous used)
plus
the cost of freight and insurance to transport the goods to New Zealand,
(and duty if applicable).

A legal regulation allows Customs not to collect charges (Duty/GST) that equate to less than $60 payable.

The exception to this is tobacco and alcohol product. All Customs charges are collected on these products.

For shipments where the Customs charges are $60 or more then a clearance fee of $38.07 is also payable, made up of
-$25.30 Import Entry Transaction Fee and
-$12.77 Ministry of Primary Industries MPI) biosecurity fee.

All importers for all goods valued over $1000 are required to apply for a Client Code (NZCS224), which is attached send this to your nearest Customs office.

The rate of exchange used to convert foreign currency to New Zealand currency, for the purposes of calculating Customs charges, is the rate of exchange gazetted by Customs at the time of “entry” (clearance).

Firearms and parts are generally detained by Customs and checked for any Prohibited or Restricted Items, if this is the case you will be refer to NZ Police to obtain the correct Permits this can also be done prior to ordering these items

Regards

I'd like to go .243 as a friend here reloads for the caliber and I've always favoured it although it's not as popular in NZ as it is at home. In NZ, 7mm-08 seems to be the favorite hunting cartridge but hopefully changing from .308 to .243 won't lessen it's resale value.
