a couple weeks ago I picked up a previously owned, like new Ruger M77 MkII in 350 Rem Mag .....just cleaned it and thought I'd check the twist seeing as Ruger doesn't list them on thier website...I was surprised to see it at 12" twist...now, I know that Remington Whelens and 350's are 16" and my King barreled Whelen is 14" twist..Not that there is a twist problem with 14" or 16"...but I never expected it to be any different than a factory Remington.

when you figure the max effective bullet weight in a 2.8" 350 RM would be around 250 grains, makes ya wonder why Ruger would twist their rifles with a 1:12, when a 1:14/1:16 gets the job done fine. Guess it doesnt hurt to overtwist a bullet

Since I'm having a .35 Whelen built, I've been doing lots of research on it. I've often read that guys were having issues with their Remington Classic in 35 Whelen with the 1:16 barrel. Some of them were having trouble stabilizing 250gr bullets or it would look fine at 100yds but scatter at 200yds.

I have a 700 CDL in 35 Whelen. It sports the 1-16" twist. I have had no problem with any 250 grain bullet right out to 300 meters, as far as I have shot it to this point. Stays right around MOA with the 250 Speer and RL 15.
Regards, Eagleye.

Glad yours is good Eagleye. From what I read that's what it sounds like. Some were saying they had problems while others had no complaints.

Got a few 35 whelens with 1 in 16 including a 700 Classic and, like Eagle Eye, I never had ANY trouble ever stabilizing 250s of any kind.

However personally I would order a 1 in 14 if building a custom 35Whelen - hey wait - I did that already back in the big hair band era - still shoots good today. This one - http://35cal.com/loading.html#1908

Rembo - I'll check my Ruger77/350RM MarkII for twist and report back here. I probably did that when I got the gun over a year ago but forget now the twist. Mine should be the same as yours. Ruger website leaves the twist rate blank on their "detailed" specs on this gun (???).
