356 Win

now thats funny

the inferior bullets... well maybe I've gotta give ya that one, and I know there are some who don't like a tube mag, but to call a 94 an ugly duckling is just plain wrong - so, so wrong :(

I've yet to pick up a BLR that didn't feel like a kids toy - the wood feels and looks like cheap plastic, the angles are all wrong and they just don't feel right
See, the problem isn't Winchesters - it's that you're stuck on the WRONG Winchesters.

Now the 1895 I inherited from my grandfather for example - over a hundred years old and still going strong - is a thing of beauty, and strength. The '94... good kid's gun, I guess.

Hmmm... angles look pretty similar to me. The BLR has less drop in the butt, of course - but then, most of the calibers it's chambered for cry for a scope, whereas the Model 98... nahhhh... 30/30... round nosed bullets...

Not sure how real walnut in a BLR can feel like cheap plastic; but if the plastic finish - which is wonderously tough - has an offensive look, a handful of rottonstone and a rag turns the shine into a warm luster rather quickly. Then people start admiring the "old London hand rubbed oil finish"...

And of course the BLR suffers from not having a tubular magazine slung underneath it to add to the weight and ensure you use round nosed bullets... oh wait!

... that's a good thing...

but to each his own

Rick, that BLR sure is a pretty gun... but if you had seen the ladies I used to date (my wife excluded, of course), you'd know I'm not always attracted to pretty

Yes they look very, very similar and the BLR does look OK, but I still feel there is no comparison. Rifles like the 94 and Marlin 336 are classics, the BLR is 'modern'. I like the extra length of the 94 forend. I don't like the tapered-up shape of the BLR's forend. I like a gun that has a little weight up front, so the tube doesn't bother me. The 94 feels better to me when shouldered. I don't like the shiny wood you see on most BLR's.

Besides, if I'm ever hit by lightning and I wake up from the coma deciding I need a BLR, it wouldn't be in 358. I'd likely try 1 in 325 WSM.

My primary rifle is a M70 in 30-06. The 94 would be a secondary rifle that I buy more for the looks rather than the cartridge. It may seem some use, but not a lot. Is I said earlier, someday I will have one of each (a 307, a 356 and a 30/30) just because it would be a neat set (might as well throw a 9422 in 22 WMR in there too if I can find one for a decent price). A few 336's would be sure to follow. This collection is a long way off, but everyone's got a dream, right? :D

This thing, on the other hand, is just plain homely.

The Marlin 336 "classic"??? It's only 23 years older than the BLR and nearly 50 years younger than other, single barrel/box magazine fed lever actions.

But "modern"??? Here's a classic and the BLR:

My, what similarities... it's almost like they share a certain parentage...

I like the extra length of the 94 forend. I don't like the tapered-up shape of the BLR's forend. I like a gun that has a little weight up front, so the tube doesn't bother me. I don't like the shiny wood you see on most BLR's.
The tapered forend worked and still seems to work on the Model 95. Shiny wood? (or shiny bluing or whatever). Five minutes with some rottonstone and a rag. You can't easily make a dull finish shiny, but you can easily make a shiny finish dull. Think of it as providing purchasers with an option...

Besides, if I'm ever hit by lightning and I wake up from the coma deciding I need a BLR, it wouldn't be in 358. I'd likely try 1 in 325 WSM.
There's a classic cartridge! How about .405 Winchester?

This collection is a long way off, but everyone's got a dream, right? :D
What would life be without dreams? But I gave up on collecting long ago: I still have a safe and a half full of firearms, but I couldn't abide owning firearms I owned but never used in the field regularly. And so, for example, my collection of Husky featherweights got cut down to three... with one I am threatening to sell.

This thing, on the other hand, is just plain homely.

Oh yes, it is easy to see how strikingly "different" its' appearance is from these ingeniously shaped and contoured... ummmm... "classics"!

we agree to disagree

I'm not into classic cartridges and such - I'm sure your 1895 is a beaut. I just like the looks of the 94's and 336's - you don't, that's your choice.

Thanx for all the ... er... 'input'

More Marlins for you... more Browning designs for me! We don't have to fight over them...
