357/ 38 special handgun

One thing to keep in mind when talking SA vs. DA revolvers. When the range goes green/safe you have to prove to the RO that your firearm is clear. With a DA this means swinging out the cylinder (brass ejected). With a SA revolver, it means taking the cylinder out of the frame, depending on the model of SA this can be a pain in the as$.
Just something to keep in mind. Range depending, the RO may be satisfied with an open loading gate once he's seen every cyl is clear. Then again, he may not, and understandably so.

All of these will shoot .38 special & they are some of the finest guns to ever come from the S&W factory. The short ones are model 65 (.357 Mag chambered), the 4" one is a model 64, & the 6" is the model 14, both chambered in .38 spl.
You can find them in the EE from time to time & you would do well with any one of them.
Basically it comes down to fixed or adjustable sights.
Let me also state, nothing wrong with rugers either....

I have had or do have nearly every gun listed here. A S&W 586/686 is about the best you can get for a 38/357 gun to shoot IMO. I have a 4.2" 686 and it can make a single ragged hole slow fire at 25 yards.
I had a Ruger New Model Blackhawk Convertable but found out that I am not a single action guy. Great gun and very accurate but just not my thing.
I have a Colt Python and it is a very nice shooter, but for something you are going to shoot a lot, get the S&W - its just as good without the hefty price tag.
I had a Ruger SP101 and found that it was lacking compared to the S&W's in the finish and trigger. But it was a solid gun with a good price.
I have a S&W M66 which is a stainless K frame and find it a touch light for full house .357's. Also I have heard they can crack the frame in the forcing cone area.
I had a S&W M19 which was blued version of the K frame. Great shooter, but like the M66, a little light for hot .357's.
I have a S&W 686 which is probably my favourite gun to shoot right now. Tack drive, points perfect, and great trigger. It is that good.
I had a S&W M27 and sold it. One of the biggest mistakes ever. It was a great gun, and would be my second choice if you shoot a lot of hot .357's.
I just bought a S&W M28 which I am waiting to get my grubby hands on.
I have fired a friends Dan Wesson, and can say that is a nice gun. Probably on par with the S&W's.
I fired another frineds Taurus, and it is not in the same league as any other gun on this list.
