357 lever action vs 44 mag lever action

It seems like 357 is by far more popular than the 44 mag in lever action; I suppose it’s the price of ammo mostly. I feel like I should eventually get a lever gun in pistol caliber.

Simple question: which caliber do you prefer and why? What do you use yours for?

357 Mag for general utility but definitively 44 Mag for hunting!
Remember that lowly 30-30 Win is a powerhouse compared to 44 Mag...

Decisions, decisions.....

I really like the Marlin stainless carbine in .44Mag as an all round hiking gun that I can use one the range and some bush hunting for deer. The rear peep and rail are just what I need. While the .357 is appealing, I have come across bears on at least two occasions in the bush already, so the extra power of the .44mag would be just enough to make me feel comfortable with it. If I want to purposefully hunt bear or larger game I have a .45/50 already, but don't see it as a gun that I will shoot nearly as much or carry as a hiking gun.

But .357 is tempting as well, and I can see the Henry X being a serious alternative, especially since the .38/357mag provides so many options, especially for more time on the range, or even lighter loads for smaller game. A little more work to take care of, lacking the stainless component, but also adaptable for more tactical uses such as mounting a light.

I may need to plan long term for both, and perhaps see what I can sell if only to thin out the collection to what I can regularly shoot. Since I'll be stuck at home all winter less some range visits and ice fishing, it might be a good season to reload.

How about a 240gr JHP trucking along at 1950fps. Compare that to a 30-30. As stated earlier, reloading is a must for 44 or any larger caliber if you’re going to shoot more than a box a year.

In real world shooting, they're very close, with some claiming 44 mag may take it with some stouter and heavier loads under 100M.

What kind of load are you brewing up to get that kind of velocity?
The fastest i have shot one across the screens was around 1750 fps and that is max loads of h110 and lil gun

Rossi ‘92, 20 inch barrel. Hornady JHP. 24.5gr H110

(Now I’ll admit the primers come out a little flat :D )

I used 25gr of H110 in my Blackhawk. 1400fps out of a 7 1/2” barrel. My 45 load is 26gr under a 250. No, I don’t have any other 44 or 45 around to mix up the ammo.

I my life i have taken multiple mooses with different calibers.
I did with a full stock Mares leg 44 mag at 75 yards, boiler room shot, 15 yards run and dropped dead.

I did with a 30-30 a big cow at 90 yards, boiler room shoot, fell on the spot but needed a finishing shot.

The moose shoot with the 44 mag was dead, dead, that day, i realized how potent a 240 gr revolver round 44 mag is out of a longer barrel.
That day i became a fan.

What do people think about barrel lengths? I’m thinking a 16” barrel is handier. I see there’s a lot more support for the 44 than I would have thought.

The 16" looks like a slick and handy unit. But after owning a few that length I came to the conclusion that they just don't fit and point like a 20". The 20 is a good compromise between short and handy and functional in my opinion.
