.357 mag Win.Model 94 Problem

I just recently got a new Winchester Model 94 in .357 mag. I took her out to the range the otherday and had a problem. When i loaded any more than 2 rounds into the tubemag and then chambered a round the the piece that holds the rest of the rounds in the tube mag lets go and all the shells pop out into the action leaving me with an hour or so of trying to get them all out.

when i put one round in the tube mag and took a look at how it was held in place, the metal arm seemed to hold it in securily. So why would it be releasing when i chamber the first round? Im guessing this is something for the gun smith isnt it?

Sorry for my vague description of the parts of my rifle, im somewhat new to this. Hopefully i painted a clear picture of my problem. Thanks!

Where did you buy it? I think I would start by returning it to the shop you got it from and see what they have to say.

Some of the more gunsmitherly guys will probably have a better explanation for you, but this reminds me of a problem a friend of mine had years back with his '94 .30-30

There is a "knuckle" on the plate that you are describing. When you move the lever down, this rotates enough to let a cartridge slip over it onto the loading ramp. If you work the lever too slow, or the "knuckle" is too worn, another round will slip into the action, and it is a pain in the ass to get out.

My suspicion is that you may be too gentle with the rifle.

If you haven't already, try cycling the action fast and hard, and see if you have the same problem.

Cartridge length could be the culprit, if these rounds are really short compared to factory amo, but more likely, the cartridge stop is worn, or broken.
Check that the tube mag is not excessively loose.
Speed should not come into the picture if the rifle is in good shape. I can work mine as slow as I want, and function is perfect.

If you can see the bit in the photo, that is the "knuckle" I refer to, or the "shell stop" as John Y Canuck says. It's the bit highlighted in red:

You can see this one is nice and crisp and square. That's because it's a brand new '94. My friend's was shaped more like a peanut.

thanks for the info guys, i called the dealer i bought it from and the warrenty is still valid. so im takin her in to be fixed on saturday.

"knuckle" that is good way to describe that thing, i was racking my brain trying to come up with a good description of my problem.

the dealer also menthioned that seeing that the rifle is basically new, there maybe the wrong sized "Knuckle" in there. maybe one for a .44 mag. anyway i guess ill find out on saturday.
