357 Magnum as a hunting round (From lever-action rifle)

I had and briefly used a Marlin .357 hunting on our own land, yes it works and no it's not a good choice. Get something that impacts above 2,400fps or so and you'll see a big difference in how the animals react. They reacted to my .357 carbine a lot like arrowed animals, ran til they lost blood pressure, very little "shock". For the same weight there are far more effective hunting rifles, and in the same sentence it'll just barely make it as a deer hunting cartridge. If you like to do things the challenging way, it's ideal.

I'm just guessing, but it might be something to do with the size of the population or number of hunters .... For example, there are shotgun only areas in B.C. so that a missed shot won't travel too far and endanger someone. A missed shot with a larger caliber rifle would travel much farther.

Lol. Ain't much out there larger than a 12 gauge slug (18.5mm)... I get your point though.

Shotgun only areas ban single projectiles in BC, so no slugs it's buckshot and birdshot.

A great example of hilarious laws...cross the border north to the Yukon and it's illegal to use anything other than slugs out of a shotgun to hunt big game...somebody's clearly out to lunch on what is humane and effective...

OP - Just a heads up in using what some call a hand gun round. I was stopped by CO's in the foothills out here a few years back on a routine road check during hunting season. On the seat was a box of 38 cal. They had me out of the truck and being "interviewed" while two others went through my truck for almost 30min. Tuned out they didn't believe that it was for my little carbine until I clued in and eventually had a chance to show them the caliber stamped on one of the rifles behind the seat. Pretty neat afterward as the boys had never seen a lever in 357 before and were really quite interested in it. Turned out good, but a lesson to me to not leave 357/38 rounds out where they can be seen. Had been using 38 semi WC for grouse along the road ways - lots of fun.
