I had and briefly used a Marlin .357 hunting on our own land, yes it works and no it's not a good choice. Get something that impacts above 2,400fps or so and you'll see a big difference in how the animals react. They reacted to my .357 carbine a lot like arrowed animals, ran til they lost blood pressure, very little "shock". For the same weight there are far more effective hunting rifles, and in the same sentence it'll just barely make it as a deer hunting cartridge. If you like to do things the challenging way, it's ideal.
