357 Magnum Cast Loads for Ruger #1

Hello all,

I am trying to do some load development for a 220 grain gas checked bullet in the 357 Mag,
This will be used in a Ruger #1.

I don't think that I currently have any suitable powders, as all my powders appear to be too fast burning or too slow burning.

I currently have on hand W231, SR 7625, HS 6, BL-C (2) and IMR 4350.

2400 looks like it would be a good powder, but I have been unable to find any.

Has anyone done any experiments with heavy .357s?
Any powder recommendations?

Try blue dot works well the only problem I had was getting enough powder space after seating the bullet to fit my revolver cylinder. You may not have that problem with the rifle as you may be able to have a longer OAL. You could also try Trail Boss, it's my powder of choice lately for everything cast. Also check out the "Cast Boolits" forums, an absolute wealth of info for cast shooters.

Yes Castboolits is where I found the reference to 2400. It makes sense as Blue Dot falls in the same burn rate bracket.

Even with seating the bullet as far out of the case as possible, I still expect to get a rainbow trajectory similar to a 38 Special because of the limited case capacity combined with such a heavy bullet.

Shooting a handgun, I guess you won't be able to tell me how many inches of drop to expect at 2 and 3 hundred yards.:p

A few weeks ago I was taking 200 yard shots at gongs with cast 38 Special in the Ruger. I was not so great offhand but braced against a beam, hits were much more consistent. :D
 
The 35 caliber cast are great fun for sure I shoot 247 grain cast in my 35 remington (336 Marlin) with trail boss, great CAS rifle.. The heaviest I have shot in my ruger gp100 is 180 grain..
