Hi all,

I am thinking to add a 357 mag. revolver to my stable. First I tought of the S and W 686 but I prefer blued guns so the 586 would be the choice. Problem is that the 586 are extremely rare. So what about the Ruger GP 100? Or the Alfa proj? I want to get quality and of course not break the bank.

Thanks for your toughts

Is the Ruger blued? I took a quick look at one a couple of weeks ago and did not like the finish at all. It appeared to be black paint. Have not seen anything from Alfa yet; looking forward to it.

I got rid of my GP 100 in favour of my 586, more accurate and the stock trigger is better that the GP 100 after springs and a polish. NOTHING wrong with the GP, I just prefer the Smith.

The Smith 586 guns are nicer then the Ruger GP100, but they cost quite a bit more. Are they worth it, I think they are. I have both guns and like them both the Smith is just nicer. Don't let anyone fool you the smith will last you just as long as the Ruger will.

It really is just up to you as what you want or like and what you want to spend.

Got a used Model 19 for $600 three years ago, a Model 28 for $400 last year. Both shoot great. Interesting how the lighter m19 loves full-house .357mag, not so happy with .38s, and the much-heavier Highway Patrolman prefers .38Specials (6 grains of Unique under 147-grain copper-plated bullets)...

S&W 586's are the class of the field, but cost more. Ruger GP100's with 10 lb. hammer spring and lighter(8lb.) trigger return spring($10 set), as well as a polish of the moving parts(your time), then shimming($20) the trigger and hammer...results in an action comparable to the 586 for $30 and some work.
I haven't heard much about the Alfa Proj revolvers yet...

I love .357. I love to reload it as much as shoot it. .44 is great too but sometimes overwhelming. I like the fact that you can load it as light as .38sp and (if you have a Ruger) approaching the 'bang of a .44!

Smith TRR8
8 rounds, good trigger, good finish. Just shoot it, no mods. Was not really a fan until I held one. It would be my next revolver.

Ruger DOES make a great gun. But having had or shot both my opinion is that the S&W is that little bit better. Mostly this is based on the trigger feel. Even when fitted with spring kits the Ruger trigger has that annoying little "click" during the pull when the cylinder stop bolt is released. I find that annoying when I'm trying for a nice smooth DA pull.

But if you don't plan on shooting in DA that much then there really isn't much to make the 586 that much better, if better at all, than the GP100.

The trick, if you enjoy blued guns, would be finding a blued GP. Ruger makes primarily stainless guns. And in fact I believe that their "blued" GP is actually a stainless that is given some sort of blackening treatment that works on stainless.

If you simply can't wait for a nice used 586 to show up then look for the review threads on our recent Alpha Project guns done by Van-Man and myself. Short story is that we both like them. The Alpha is more in the K frame size though. So it has more in common with the Model 19 than it does the 586.

I found that in my own K frame guns that I preferred my .357's to be just slightly down loaded by about 10 to 15% off max power. The full house loads were OK. Just a little hard on the hands for a large number of shots during a session. Reducing the loads by a touch made them far more tolerable for steady shooting.

In the end though I likely shoot 200 .38's for every round of .357.

Those recent 7 and 8 round guns from S&W are nice guns. I'm all for more capacity. But if you want to use them in any competition matches read the rules first. You're often only allowed to load 6 or if you do load the max number you're only allowed to shoot 6. If you shoot more you incur a penalty of some form. So keep that in mind.

The GP100 is a great gun for the price, but yes the S&W is a great gun as well but twice the price

You're assuming new. I've been getting mine used in great condition for between $500 and $600.

A quick check showed me that Wanstalls has a S&W 686 in 6" for $900 and a 4.2" 686 for $1000. Epps has a BLUED GP100 (just when you figure they are rare as hen's teeth I trip over one just like that :D) for $660. So I'd call it 50% more and not double.
